Digital inclusion also means digital protection.
In Colombia, we supported a project focused on strengthening the digital security of human rights and environmental defenders working in high-risk and often remote contexts. Through a series of in-person, context-specific workshops delivered by Fundación Karisma across rural territories and Bogotá, the project reached 89 defenders.
Participants built practical skills to better protect their data, communication, and online presence. Beyond awareness, the training focused on real-world application, supporting participants to install and use tools suited to their devices and connectivity conditions. The approach was intentionally participatory, ensuring that people with different levels of digital experience could engage meaningfully.
Working in rural and high-risk environments also required adaptation. Limited connectivity meant shifting toward offline-first methods, while security considerations placed participant safety above visibility. These adjustments not only ensured the trainings could take place, but also strengthened their relevance and impact.
This project highlights an important reality: access to the internet must go hand in hand with the ability to use it safely. For many communities, especially those working on human rights and environmental protection, digital security is essential.
