What makes people feel like Europe is truly theirs to shape? That is the question that brought us to Florence this week.

We were honoured to be part of the official opening of ’s archives at . Seventy years of believing that Europe will not be built by treaties alone. That culture, belonging, and shared futures matter.

What keeps us going? The people. 💙

We built ORoL for anyone who feels something important is at stake. Not just law students, but doctors, journalists, engineers, all asking the same questions about democracy in Europe.

Something new is coming 👀 follow us and stay tuned!

What happens when you give 45 students from across the EU the tools, the mentors, and a seat at the table? They show up. 💪🏼

We built the Our Rule of Law Academy to do exactly that, pairing students from 25 Member States with world-leading rule of law experts, sending them to Brussels to pitch real policy proposals to real policymakers, and publishing their work for the world to read. 📘⚖️

Because the future of European democracy shouldn’t wait until we graduate 👀

✨ Spotlight on: 🇪🇸 ✨

This marks the final post in our Our Democracy Report series — where 60 young Democracy Rapporteurs mapped the strengths and challenges of democracy across 16 EU member states, Ukraine & the EU level.

📊 Only 3% of Spaniards see their justice system as “very independent,” while over half view it negatively — reflecting low trust and perceived political influence.

👉 Strength mapped: Spain ranks above the EU average in digital skills (66% vs. 55.6%) and is a leader in digital justice reform — boosting transparency and access to rights.
👉 Weaknesses mapped: Political interference in the judiciary, low youth voter turnout, and uneven climate transition threaten democratic inclusion and trust.
👉 Recommendations mapped: Depoliticise judicial appointments, invest in civic education, and ensure a fair, regionally balanced green transition.

👉 Strength mapped: Ireland leads in education and opportunity — 85% of adults complete secondary school, and 65% of young adults go to university, one of the highest rates in Europe.
👉 Weaknesses mapped: Youth disengagement, underrepresentation, limited access to justice, and slow climate progress weaken democratic participation.

📊 Belgium ranks 5th in the EU for gender equality and has the second-lowest gender pay gap (4.7%) — with women under 25 earning slightly more than men.

👉 Strength mapped: Strong equality laws, transparent pay reporting, and collective wage bargaining make Belgium a frontrunner in closing gender gaps and fostering fairness across society.
👉 Weaknesses mapped: Low citizen participation, overcrowded prisons, and unregulated online political advertising threaten public trust and democratic accountability.
👉 Recommendations mapped: Institutionalise citizen dialogues at federal and regional levels, guarantee long-term funding to improve prison conditions and justice efficiency, and regulate online political advertising while promoting digital literacy to counter manipulation.
