Over the past six months, STEAMup has visited more than 20 schools across the region to share the possibilities of FIRST®. 🤖

From introducing FIRST® LEGO® League and FIRST® Tech Challenge to organizing workshops and exploring how robotics can fit into the classroom, every conversation has been unique. Together with teachers and schools, we’ve explored how FIRST can inspire students to develop technical skills, creativity, teamwork, and confidence.

It’s been amazing to see so much enthusiasm for STEM education, and we’re excited to welcome even more schools into the FIRST community in the future.🙌

A huge thank you to all the schools, teachers, and partners who welcomed us this past year. We can’t wait to see what we’ll build together next!

“I discovered FIRST in secondary school when I joined the FIRST® LEGO® League (FLL). After two years in FLL and four years in FIRST® Tech Challenge (FTC), I thought my FIRST journey had come to an end. But a few years later, my former FTC coach, who had joined the organization, invited me back as a judge. Since then, I’ve become part of the FIRST community once again.“💬

🎉 Volunteer Spotlight: Rob!

FIRST® involvement
“My FIRST journey started through a Fontys Expo project. FIRST® Robotics Competition (FRC) Team Rembrandts was one of the projects, but by far the most interesting one. I joined Team Rembrandts in the 2014/2015 season and competed in FRC Recycle Rush with our robot, Brick. Through Team Rembrandts, I discovered the different FIRST programs and gradually became more involved as a volunteer.”💬

What does your volunteer role look like?
“I have several volunteer roles across different FIRST programs. I help build and set up events, including AV, livestreams, scoring systems, and networking. As Lead Scorekeeper, I prepare the scoring system, inspections, and match schedules. I’ve also worked as an AV/webcast operator, FIRST® LEGO® League judge, helped set up the FIRST Championship, and photographed FRC regional events, capturing teams and robots in action.”💬

What has been your favorite moment as a volunteer?
“The FIRST® Tech Challenge European Premier event stands out the most. It was amazing to be part of such a large event with a tight schedule and see how, together with all the volunteers, everything came together so smoothly. And of course, the moment Ron tricked me into filming from the audience, only so he could surprise me with the Volunteer of the Year award!”💬

💡 What makes FIRST so special?
“The enthusiasm that the FIRST programs spark in students. Watching them get excited, learn, and grow makes volunteering incredibly rewarding.”💬

“My FIRST journey started when one of my son joined the robotics club at his school. They were looking for volunteers and judges, so I decided to get involved.” 💬

“As a judge, the day starts with a warm and welcoming briefing early in the morning. From there, we spend the day meeting amazing teams and hearing their stories. We have a lot of mind enriching panel discussions and personal exchange amongst us judges and finalize the day thanking all the teams for their inspiring competition, gracious professionalism and their overwhelming contribution to the event.”💬

“While judging a team at the Championship, I heard their heartwarming story about their robot-building process: After winning their qualifier and securing their place at the Championship, some lower-ranked teams decided to sponsor them with their robot parts by disassembling their robots.”💬

STEAMup zoekt enthousiaste FIRST® Alumni die als studentmentor scholen in de Brainportregio willen begeleiden tijdens hun FIRST®-seizoen.

Als studentmentor help je onder andere bij:
🔹 Het begeleiden en coachen van leerlingen bij deelname aan FIRST®
🔹 Technische vraagstukken rondom robotica en engineering
🔹 Het team voorbereiden op regionale wedstrijden en evenementen

Again this year, we had the pleasure of bringing together our amazing FIRST® Tech Challenge Benelux and FIRST® LEGO® League Brainport volunteers from across the Netherlands for our annual Volunteer Thank You Evening, a special moment to celebrate the people who make our FIRST® community possible.

The evening was all about connection, appreciation, and having fun together. Guests enjoyed delicious snacks, a visit from a traditional Dutch frietkar🍟 , and refreshing drinks while catching up with fellow volunteers and sharing stories from another exciting season.

To add some friendly competition to the evening, we organized a fun bingo activity featuring four different versions of the game🎲:. From laughs and surprises to a little bit of rivalry, it was a great way for everyone to relax, connect, and enjoy the evening together.

A huge thank you to all our incredible volunteers - whether you are supporting teams, events, or the wider community, your contribution makes a lasting impact. 💙

We are still amazed by the European Premier Event we had a couple of weeks ago. Throughout this event Jorien and Vera made sure everyone was taken care of. From keeping everyone hydrated to bringing around snacks, they continuously looked after the volunteers and crew so everyone could focus on their roles.

For their outstanding dedication and care, Jorien and Vera have been awarded the Gracious Professionalism® pin. Their attention to detail, positive attitude, and willingness to take care of others truly made a difference. They went above and beyond to create a welcoming and supportive environment for everyone involved.

Their commitment is a perfect example of Gracious Professionalism and the spirit of volunteering that makes events like this possible.🧡
