The Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven is one of the first public museums for contemporary art to be established in Europe. The museum’s collection of 3.150 works of art includes key works and archives by Joseph Beuys, Marc Chagall, René Daniëls, Marlene Dumas, Sheela Gowda, Patricia Kaersenhout, Gülsün Karamustafa, Iris Kensmil, Oskar Kokoschka, John Körmeling, El Lissitzky, Paul McCarthy, Pablo Picasso, Martha Rosler, and Lidwien van de Ven. The museum has an experimental approach towards art’s role in society. Openness, hospitality and knowledge exchange are important to us. We challenge ourselves and our visitors to think about art and its place in the world, covering a range of subjects, including the role of the collection as a cultural 'memory' and the museum as a public site. International collaboration and exchange have made the Van Abbemuseum a place for creative cross-fertilisation and a source of surprise, inspiration and imagination for its visitors and participants.

“Wij zijn de zonnewijzers” ☀️
Kom binnen. Kijk rond. Doe mee.

Met deze woorden opende Defne Ayas afgelopen zaterdag Museum als Zonnewijzer. Onze bijdrage aan de Dutch Design Week brengt het kindermuseum en het archeologisch museum in gesprek met de musea voor moderne en hedendaagse kunst.

Ons museum is oorspronkelijk ontworpen met het oog op de zonsopkomst. Vanuit dit idee nodigt de tentoonstelling ons uit om na te denken over menselijke waardigheid en hoe we samen onze weg vinden in de wereld.

✨ Veel dank aan ons hele museumteam, dat deze tentoonstelling in minder dan zes maanden heeft gerealiseerd, en aan al onze partners, medewerkers en supporters.

With these words, Defne Ayas opened Museum as Sundial this past Saturday. Our contribution to the Dutch Design Week brings the children’s museum and the archaeology museum into conversation with the museums of modern and contemporary art.

Starting from our museum’s original orientation towards sunrise, the exhibition invites us to reflect on human dignity and how we can move through the world together.

✨ Heartfelt thanks to our entire museum team for bringing this exhibition to life in less than six months, and to all our partners, collaborators and supporters.

Vandaag opent de tentoonstelling Museum als zonnewijzer ☀️. Swipe voor alle betrokken kunstenaars, ontwerpers en collecties. Een museum als zonnewijzer: niet alleen een instrument om tijd zichtbaar te maken, maar ook een manier om onze plek in de wereld te onderzoeken. A museum as a sundial: not only a tool for marking time, but also a way of exploring our place in the world. Museum as Sundial is a project that brings together contemporary art, design, archaeology and play, connecting them with collective ways of learning and living. Artists, designers and System Thinkers include Ana María Millán, ADEZIV Network, EDHV, Kiki & Joost, Adele Dipasquale, Gala Porras-Kim, Michael Portnoy, Paul Panhuysen, Ayumi Paul, Ei Arakawa-Nash and John Körmeling. Archival and collection material includes works from the Rhoda Kellogg International Child Art Collection, ABC books by artists, the National Archive of Brabant Folk Songs, and mandala drawings by Anne Frank on loan from Anne Frank Huis. Spatial design is by Studio Diogo Passarinho, with graphic design by Studio Remco van Bladel.

Directed by Defne Ayas, collectively inspired and generated. Coordinated by Abril Cisneros Ramírez (Assistant Curator, developed with generous generous input from Yolande Zola Zoli van der Heide, (Senior Curator, Steven ten Thije (Head of Collection and current Interim Business Director], Maziar Afrassiabi (Curator), among others, the project is developed in dialogue with the museum team, including the museum choir and volunteers. Special thanks to Anne Frank Museum, Boekenberg Eindhoven, Christian van der Linde, Helène and Raphael Panhuysen, Magda Boutique Eindhoven, Nico Arts, and The Watermill Center.

✏️ Vandaag was een schoolklas als eerste aan zet. Vanaf zaterdag is het jouw beurt! Neem je kinderen, je vrienden en je eigen innerlijke kind mee. Een oproep aan kinderen van alle leeftijden: teken mee in de nieuwe installatie van kunstenaar Ei Arakawa-Nash.

Geïnspireerd door de experimentele Gutai-kunstenaars uit het naoorlogse Japan nodigt deze bijzondere installatie bezoekers van alle leeftijden uit om samen één groot kunstwerk te maken op de vloer van het museum. Teken, verken, speel en draag bij aan een werk dat steeds verder groeit.

🌞Museum as Sundial opent zaterdag en zit vol ruimtes om samen te delen, maken en spelen. 🎟️ De opening is gratis. Reserveer je tickets via de link in bio.

EN ✏️ Today, a school group became the first to make their mark. From Saturday onwards, it’s your turn! Bring your children, your friends, and your inner child. Calling kids of all ages! Draw in artist Ei Arakawa-Nash’s new installation.

Inspired by the experimental Gutai artists of post-war Japan, this unique installation invites visitors of all ages to create one large artwork together on the museum floor. Draw, explore, play, and contribute to a work that continues to grow over time.

De tentoonstelling krijgt steeds meer vorm, ons technische team werkt samen met de kunstenaars aan Museum als Zonnenwijzer☀️

Vanaf 17 oktober, tijdens , grijpt Museum als Zonnewijzer terug op een bijzonder uitgangspunt van het oorspronkelijke museumgebouw uit 1936: de relatie met de zon. De tentoonstelling onderzoekt hoe een museum ons kan helpen opnieuw onze weg te vinden in een tijd van grote maatschappelijke, technologische en ecologische veranderingen. Elk jaar nodigen we bewoners en makers uit Eindhoven uit om een eigen tentoonstelling te maken. Dit jaar werken we samen met ADEZIV, System Thinkers en een platform voor neuro-inclusie en neurobevrijding. In de installatie Lost Marbles Industries stap je binnen in een fictieve fabriek waar niet productiviteit, maar rust centraal staat. Geïnspireerd door Eindhovens industriële geschiedenis onderzoekt de installatie hoe de systemen waarin we leven ook anders ontworpen kunnen worden. Pak een oranje clipboard, deel jouw ervaringen en denk mee over rust, werk en samenleven. Jouw bijdragen worden onderdeel van de tentoonstelling en helpen letterlijk mee om de fabriek verder op te bouwen! Dit is een van de vele interactieve installaties in ons vernieuwde collectiegebouw. In Lost Marbles Industries, you step inside a fictional factory where rest, rather than productivity, takes centre stage. Inspired by Eindhoven’s industrial history, the installation explores how the systems we live in today could be designed differently. Met Summer of Loss keert de Haagse componist en multidisciplinair kunstenaar Joeri Woudstra terug naar zijn ambient roots.
