Wildfires are becoming more widespread, burning at least twice as much tree cover today as they did two decades ago.

How can we tackle this?

This week at , our experts Rosalien Jezeer and Humberto Gomez led a session to dive into this topic and the need for tropical countries to include management into their 🌍🌳🔥.

The challenge is big, and we suggest countries:

1️⃣ Recognize the impact of wildfires

2️⃣ Set clear targets (e.g. GHG emissions)

3️⃣ Implement comprehensive measurements

4️⃣ Integrate adaptation and mitigation

5️⃣ Strengthen institutional capacity

6️⃣ Promote inter-institutional coordination

May thanks to the audience and speakers Wampie Libon from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mercy Owusu Ansah from Tropenbos Ghana, Arief Wijaya from WRI Indonesia and Claudia Ortiz from UNDP for being part of this insightful session.

In the heart of tropical forests, a powerful shift is happening.

Areas that face relentless deforestation and biodiversity loss are being transformed by those who know them best.

With their deep-rooted knowledge, Indigenous peoples and local communities are leading the way in sustainable forest management.

Our latest video, "Voices from the Landscape," shows how local communities do this.

From obtaining forest rights in the Democratic Republic of Congo to smallhoder agroforestry practices in Indonesia, these communities blend tradition and innovation to transform their territories into thriving, resilient, and biodiverse landscapes.

Amid government budget cuts for development cooperation in the Netherlands, we reinforce our commitment to continue supporting these local leaders in shaping a better future for people and forests.

Call for Contributions: Tropical Forest Issues #63 – Women as Stewards of Forests

We encourage everyone with a case example or about the impact of women’s participation in forest management to contribute to this issue!

Every day, face gendered barriers and challenges in tropical forest , restricting them from participating in decision-making processes and forest governance.

Despite these barriers, women and girls across the tropics are at the forefront of driving transformative change in management, benefiting both people and ecosystems.

This edition of our Tropical Forest Issues (TFI63) will highlight the of women’s participation in forest management, conservation, and use.

TFI63, led by Todora Rogelja, will explore how women overcome these challenges and what enabling conditions are necessary for their success.

🌱 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗺𝗲𝘀:
✔️ Gendered barriers to forest landscape management
✔️ Inclusive forest governance and women's leadership
✔️ Impact of women's participation on environmental and social outcomes
✔️ Conditions for successful women’s engagement in forest management

🔍 We are looking for a wide range of contributions, including stories from practice, early career researchers or impactful project examples.

If you have a case study, research, or story that aligns with these themes, we invite you to contribute! Submission of abstracts may be done in English, French or Spanish.

📅 New submission deadline: 17 November 2024

📣 Join us at the CBD COP16 Event: ! 🌎🌳🦜

Communities worldwide hold traditional knowledge that is crucial to halting biodiversity loss. However, this , often passed down through elders, is at risk.

Together with Tropenbos Colombia and our network, we are organizing a youth-led dialogue about traditional knowledge transmission for the sustainable use and of biodiversity.

In this session, young leaders from Bolivia, Colombia, the Philippines, Suriname, and Uganda and an elder from the Colombian region will explore what people need to realize their vision for the future.

Tropical forests are vital for life on Earth, harbouring unique biodiversity, regulating the climate, and providing livelihood opportunities for 1.6 billion people. However, unsustainable land use is driving deforestation and degradation at alarming rates. In 2023 Tropenbos International, continued its efforts to reverse this trend by strengthening communities in implementing locally owned solutions for sustainable forest governance and management, benefiting both people and forests.

Our annual review 2023 highlights our aspirations, key achievements, and the challenges we face as we work towards a brighter future for tropical forests and the communities that depend on them.

Thank you for your unwavering support and collaboration!
