Yesterday, our Wantijpark parkrun initiative celebrated its 100th edition in DORDRECHT.
The 100th event coincided with the official unveiling of the restored ‘Stemvork’ artwork in its familiar spot at WantijPark. The original unveiling took place on 11 June 1966, marking the 55th anniversary of the then-existing Drum, Fife, and Trumpet Corps Jubal, now known as Jubal Dordrecht.
Nearly sixty years later, the new unveiling occurred alongside the 115th anniversary of Jubal Dordrecht. Previously, the Stemvork was in very poor condition and was removed from the park by the municipality last year. As the artwork was not registered as an official municipal piece, it fell outside regular management and maintenance.
Consequently, due to its hazardous condition, it was removed. The introduction of WantijParkrun, an initiative bringing runners together every Saturday morning for a 5k run and walk event, prompted discussions about the StemVork. The artwork was carefully restored, sandblasted, galvanised, and powder-coated.
The Tuning Fork can now stand proudly at Wantijpark for years to come. Later, the artwork will be mounted on a specially manufactured plinth.
At Sport for Empowerment Foundation (SFEF), we are pleased to benefit from every runner who purchased a running T-shirt for the 100th edition of Wantij Parkrun and for the donations made to support our work in Sierra Leone.
Thanks to the entire WantijParkrun Dordrecht team and Sandra Diel, who championed this remarkable initiative.
