🇫🇮🐕 Hunting with dogs – an ancient Finnish tradition that lives on 🌲🏹
In Finland, hunting with dogs has been part of life for as long as people have lived here. It remains a cornerstone of our hunting culture — where loyalty, instinct, and cooperation between human and dog create something truly unique.
🪶 A 9,000-year-old bond
Archaeological finds show that dog-assisted hunting in the Nordic region dates back over 9,000 years. Bone fragments and rock carvings found in Finland, Norway, and Karelia depict hunters side by side with their dogs — a partnership that has endured through millennia.
🐕🦺 Finnish breeds, Finnish heritage
Our national breed, the Finnish Spitz, descends directly from those early hunting dogs. Alongside the Finnish Hound and Karelian Bear Dog, they form a proud part of Finland’s living heritage. The Finnish Hunters’ Association, Finnish Kennel Club, and Finnish Spitz Organization have even proposed that this tradition be added to the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List.
🍂 A season of teamwork and trust
Each autumn, around 100,000 dogs head into the forest with their owners. Their sharp senses, endurance, and natural drive make them invaluable hunting companions. For the dogs, hunting fulfills natural instincts — movement, scent work, and purpose — strengthening the bond between hunter and companion.
🐾 More than hunting partners
From retrievers and pointing dogs to moose and tracking dogs, every breed contributes to responsible, ethical, and sustainable hunting. Outside the hunting season, they are beloved family members — a living link between modern life and Finland’s oldest traditions.
🇫🇮❤️ A bond written in nature, forged through centuries, and carried proudly into the future.
