'I've read several books of the war (the SRY), but an operation that's not mentioned much is 'Market Garden'.
The Guards Armoured took the lead, but the 'Sherwood Rangers' were right behind them, clearing up, as you might say.
Leading the Rangers, 1st troop, C Squadron.
I was gunner in the leading tank, finding a few targets, I didn't know the members of the tank crew, I was pushed in at the last minute.
The outcome being that when the Guards halted for some reason, we carried on passing them, and on to the Nijmegen bridge.
Anyway when we were halfway across the river, we were ordered back, as the bridge was mined and could blow at any minute, so from there we went to relieve the American 82nd Airborne at Beek.
Whilst there, we were the first British tanks to fight on German soil.'
This happened on this day, September 21, in 1944.'
