State of Fashion is a platform for showcasing alternatives to the current fashion system. How can fashion contribute to a better world?

We connect fashion, explicitly and honestly, with the societal questions and challenges of our time. With the central theme Ways of Caring, from 3 June-10 July State of Fashion fashion biennale will look for ways to make the fashion industry more sustainable and caring. 🚀 ONE WEEK LEFT TO APPLY — A call for new voices! 🚀
There is just one week left to apply for the Creative Advisory Council (CAC) 2027–2028 of State of Fashion!

We are looking for engaged thinkers and makers from fashion, art, design, research and related fields who bring a distinct perspective and are interested in critical inquiry, ethical practice and collective thinking.

As an international group of advisors and a permanent part of State of Fashion, the CAC acts as a creative sounding board for our artistic programme and the direction of the 2028 Biennale. Together, council members challenge ideas, identify blind spots and bring new perspectives to the conversation.

💜 We are particularly interested in:
→ Research-driven profiles, such as international curators and artistic directors with a distinct vision on fashion, textiles, art and societal issues.
→ International media & PR professionals with experience in communications, press and visibility, who can contribute to how State of Fashion communicates and positions itself internationally.

✨ What to expect
• CAC period: January 2027 – opening weekend of the Biennale in May 2028
• Six digital meetings
• Attendance at the official Biennale opening weekend in Arnhem
• Remunerated membership

💥Raad van Toezicht leden gezocht💥
State of Fashion is op zoek naar twee leden voor haar Raad van Toezicht. De functie omvat 4-5 vergaderingen per jaar. Naast de vacatiegelden en het leesgeld, worden reis- en onkosten vergoed. De Raad van Toezicht evalueert eenmaal per jaar haar eigen functioneren. De benoeming gaat in op 1 januari 2027.

💚 We zoeken mensen die:
- affiniteit hebben met de modewereld;
- maatschappelijk betrokken en politiek-bestuurlijk sensitief zijn;
- positief-kritisch, constructief en onafhankelijk zijn;
- inzicht hebben in de rol van een raad van toezicht en directeur-bestuurder.

We zijn in het bijzonder geïnteresseerd in kandidaten met een politiek-bestuurlijke achtergrond en kennis van cultuurbeleid en subsidiestelsels, artistiek-inhoudelijke kennis en een relevant netwerk in de (duurzame) mode, of een andere expertise die de raad versterkt.

De raad komt 4 keer per jaar bijeen en werkt volgens de principes van de Governance Code Cultuur. De benoeming gaat in op 1 januari 2027. Vacatiegelden, leesgeld, reis- en onkosten worden vergoed.

🚀 State of Fashion is inviting new voices to join its Creative Advisory Council (CAC) for the 2027–2028 period 🚀
We are looking for sharp, engaged thinkers from fashion, art, design, research and related fields, committed to critical inquiry, ethical practice and collective thinking.

The CAC is an international group of advisors and a permanent part of State of Fashion’s organisation. It acts as a creative sounding board, contributing perspectives, questions and critical reflection to our artistic programme and the direction of the 2028 Biennale.

💜 We are not looking for a fixed combination of profiles, but are thinking of, among others:
→ Research-driven profiles, such as international curators or artistic directors with a distinct vision on fashion, textiles, art and societal issues.
→ International media & PR profiles, with experience in press, communications and visibility, who can help shape how State of Fashion tells its story and positions itself externally.
The CAC offers a space to challenge ideas, identify blind spots and keep our programme relevant, rigorous and connected to a broad range of practices and communities.

It’s been one week since the State of Fashion Biennale 2026 came to an end, and our satellite library was packed up for now. Thank you to our librarian for spearheading the project, to for designing the structure alongside us, and to the entire SoF team for seeing it through. International Library of Fashion Research’s satellite library will be coming soon to a town near you…

60,000 visitors. 7.5 weeks. Countless conversations.

State of Fashion Biennale 2026 | Available to Promise has come to a close.

Together, we looked beyond the garment to uncover the hidden systems shaping fashion today - from labour and logistics to ecology, technology and trade.

Across exhibitions, talks, performances, workshops and films, more than 30 international makers, designers and artists invited us to rethink what fashion is, and what it could become.

From the opening by Her Majesty Queen Máxima to inspiring exchanges across Arnhem and beyond - including collaborations in Ghana, Sri Lanka and China - this edition became a truly collective endeavour.

None of this would have been possible without our curators Anne Zhou, Anouchka van Driel and Shanu Walpita, our participants, partners, volunteers, the city of Arnhem, and every single person who visited, questioned, shared and contributed to the conversation.

The Biennale may be over, but the work continues.
Because the challenges facing fashion require more than promises - they require action.

As the doors of the 2026 State of Fashion Biennale close, we want to say one thing: thank you.

To every visitor who walked through our exhibitions, every artist, designer, researcher, maker, volunteer, partner, speaker and contributor who helped bring Available to Promise to life - thank you for making this edition what it became.

Throughout the Biennale, we invited visitors to look beyond the finished garment and uncover the systems that shape fashion. Together, we shared conversations, challenged assumptions and imagined new possibilities for the future.

As the final visitors leave, one work remains particularly fitting: the monumental receipts suspended throughout the exhibition. They remind us that every fashion system comes at a cost - of labour, materials, resources and care. But they also point to something else: the value of collaboration, generosity and the many people whose contributions often remain unseen.

Thank you for making the invisible visible, and for showing that another fashion system is possible.

The exhibition may have come to an end, but the conversations - and the work ahead - continue.

Yosh*ta 1967 invites us to see fashion as more than something we wear. It becomes a space where craftsmanship, cultural heritage and lived experience come together.

Founded by designer and artist Anil Padia between Nairobi and Paris, the brand creates garments that honour handwork while empowering the women who make them.

In Rites of the Water’s Edge (2025), clothing, photography and ritual intertwine, extending the experience of fashion beyond the garment itself.

What if distribution could redistribute value?

Within the Distribute pillar, Sky High Farm Goods explores how products can move through a system while creating benefits far beyond the point of sale.

Founded by Dan Colen and Daphne Seybold, the mission-led brand was created to support the work of Sky High Farm, a nonprofit organization investing in food security, food sovereignty and regenerative agriculture. Through collaborations with artists, designers and brands such as Levi’s, the project reimagines commerce as a tool for collective care.

On view are garments made from transitional and deadstock cotton alongside products from the farm itself, tracing connections between fashion, agriculture and community.

Together, they ask a simple but urgent question: who benefits when value is created, and how might it be shared more equitably?

Available to Promise invites us to look beyond the product and towards the systems of exchange that shape our everyday lives.
