State of Fashion is a platform for showcasing alternatives to the current fashion system. How can fashion contribute to a better world?

We connect fashion, explicitly and honestly, with the societal questions and challenges of our time. With the central theme Ways of Caring, from 3 June-10 July State of Fashion fashion biennale will look for ways to make the fashion industry more sustainable and caring. Maak je eigen textiel milagro tijdens deze bijzondere workshop🪡

Wat geeft jou een gevoel van bescherming, kracht of verbondenheid?

Tijdens deze gratis workshop ga je samen met kunstenaar Zyanya in gesprek over symbolen van bescherming uit verschillende culturen, tradities en persoonlijke verhalen. Denk aan voorwerpen, kleuren, tekens of rituelen die voor jou betekenis hebben.
Laat je inspireren door elkaars verhalen en ontwerp vervolgens je eigen textiel milagro: een persoonlijk symbool van hoop, kracht en bescherming.

What happens when we make fashion’s hidden systems visible?

Together with ArtEZ University of the Arts and NewTexEco, State of Fashion welcomed designers, artists, researchers, students, policymakers and industry professionals to the Assembly Available to Promise: Hidden Systems and Unseen Labour in Arnhem City Hall.

Through talks, workshops, exhibitions and collective exchange, participants explored the labour, material flows, technologies and global networks that shape fashion behind the scenes.

The Assembly reminded us that fashion is never just about garments. It is a complex system of people, processes and infrastructures - many of which remain unseen. By making these systems visible, we can begin imagining more equitable, sustainable and transformative futures.

Thank you to everyone who joined the conversation and contributed their perspectives, questions and ideas.

Workshop: Pin Your Perspective📌

On 18 June, join us for a hands-on workshop inspired by Carousel of Perspectives by Karin Mientjes (Collective Works).

Respond to the installation by writing or drawing a thought and pinning it onto the moving banners. Your contribution becomes part of a growing collective artwork, where different voices and perspectives come together.

As a keepsake, you’ll create your own button: a small personal statement to carry your perspective beyond the exhibition!

Take a piece of the biennale home.

The official State of Fashion merchandise is now available at the Eusebius Church and the City Store Arnhem. Designed as an extension of Available to Promise; Hidden Systems, Shared Futures, the collection carries the visual identity of this year’s edition beyond the exhibition space.

Whether you’re visiting the biennale or looking for a reminder of the conversations, ideas and encounters it sparked, these pieces offer a way to keep the experience close.

Ontdek het verhaal achter LiFE DESiGN, het vernieuwende streetwearlabel uit de Filipijnen. Tijdens deze bijzondere avond vertonen we het tweede deel van de documentaire, waarin vakmanschap, identiteit en creatieve energie centraal staan. 🎥🪡

Na de film gaan de ontwerpers zelf in gesprek over hun unieke visie op mode, de inspiratie achter hun werk en de ontwikkeling van hun label. Een inspirerende ontmoeting voor iedereen met interesse in mode, cultuur en creativiteit.

“The processes of creating products are normally hidden from you. The exhibition really brings them back to the surface and makes them tangible.”

One of the recurring responses we hear from visitors is how Available to Promise reveals the systems that shape the things we use every day.

In the Distribute pillar, Transit Scarves by Study O Portable traces the journeys embedded within a seemingly simple object. Made in Italy using Chinese silk - connecting the two ends of the historic Silk Road - each scarf functions both as a fashion accessory and as a map of the global logistics networks that move materials, products and value across the world.

By making these often-invisible routes visible, the work invites us to look differently at the objects we wear and the systems that bring them to us.

When visitors leave seeing not just a product, but the many movements, decisions and relationships behind it, we know the exhibition is doing what it set out to do.

De afgelopen vier jaar werkte Modemuze samen aan nieuwe vormen van digitalisering en innovatie binnen mode-erfgoed. Nu het project Unlocking Fashion Heritage wordt afgerond én Modemuze 10 jaar bestaat, vieren we dat met een bijzonder publieksboek, gemaakt samen met WBOOKS.

Within the Hype pillar, HARRI explores how fashion captures attention, circulates through culture and takes on a life of its own.

The London-based designer’s inflatable silhouettes have become instantly recognisable - sculptural forms that blur the boundaries between fashion, performance and art.

But behind the spectacle lies an equally compelling story of craft. Each piece is meticulously assembled by hand, drawing on materials, techniques and traditions that span continents: from Sri Lankan latex and Scottish wool to centuries-old woodturning practices from India.

HARRI’s work brings together diverse cultural histories into garments that feel both playful and profound.
In a landscape driven by images, HARRI asks what happens when a garment becomes more than clothing - when it becomes a symbol, a performance, a conversation.

Ontdek de kracht van zwart borduurwerk op lichte stof tijdens deze inspirerende masterclass. Maak kennis met de eeuwenoude techniek Blackwork en leer hoe je met steken, patronen en verschillende soorten garen prachtige effecten van licht, schaduw en textuur creëert.

Onder begeleiding van borduurexpert Majo van der Woude experimenteer je met traditionele én moderne toepassingen van Blackwork.

Je werkt aan diverse samples die niet alleen een mooie verzameling proefjes vormen, maar ook een vertrekpunt voor je eigen creatieve projecten.
