Throughout Extremadura there are areas with giant granite boulders, forming a scenic addition to the dehesa landscape. In winter they are covered in bright green mosses.

As most people visit Extremadura in April and May, you have the landscape pretty much to yourself. This is the castle ruin of Hornachos, where Black Wheatear, Golden Eagle are present and many white Hoop-petticoat Narcissus are flowering at this time of year.

SPRING RELEASES: VELUWE AND ACHTERHOEK EN LIEMERS

We have already announced the release of the fourth, fully updated edition of Veluwe (in Dutch), which will be available in early April. For more details on the changes we are making, visit our website (in Dutch).
https://crossbillguides.nl/crossbill-veluwe-4e-editie/
In early May this year, we will also publish the second print run of Achterhoek en Liemers. A large team of test walkers and proofreaders thoroughly reviewed the original book and walked all the routes. Among the highlights they observed were the Large Tortoiseshell, Eagle Owl, Tree Frog, Smooth Snake, and many more. It was truly a pleasure to work with such a dedicated team to update the book. The new edition will be available in our webshop and in bookstores in the first week of May. For more details on the changes we are making in this title click https://crossbillguides.nl/achterhoek-en-liemers-2e-editie/ (in Dutch).

Although officially winter, the usual bright sunny days in February in Extremadura feel like spring. Only in February, the warmth of the sun never feels so good as in February after the long winter.
In Extremadura, the first migrants are returning. Late February and March is the best time of year to see great spotted cuckoos.
