In 1903, a French archaeologist started digging in a courtyard at Karnak and kept finding statues. Two years later, he had pulled out roughly 900 stone figures and about 17,000 bronze objects.
The archaeologist was Georges Legrain and the pit lay in the court in front of the Seventh Pylon, one of the great gateways of Karnak Temple. The find became known as the Karnak Cachette, from the French word for a hiding place. Digging was slow and hard, because groundwater kept seeping into the pit, and workers hauled the heavy statues up by hand with ropes and wooden frames.
What came out spans about 2,000 years of Egyptian history. There were kings, queens priests, and gods, carved from granite, limestone, and other stones, ranging from the Middle Kingdom to the Ptolemaic period. Thousands of small bronze figurines were buried with them. Together, the objects work like a time capsule, showing how Egyptian sculpture changed from one era to the next.
The big question is why they were buried. The most common theory is that the temple had run out of space. Over centuries, people placed statues in the temple as offerings, and the courtyards filled up. Sacred images were believed to hold a spirit, so priests couldn't simply throw them away, and they may have buried them respectfully in a large pit. The burial is usually dated to the Ptolemaic period roughly the 1st century B.C., though the exact timing is debated.
Many of the pieces are now in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo and the Luxor Museum. Archaeologists still wonder what else lies beneath the temple grounds, since Karnak has been excavated for over a century and large areas haven't been fully explored.
A courtyard, a deep pit, and a thousand buried statues that no ancient writer ever explained.
Do you think the priests buried them out of respect, or were they hiding something?

A remarkably well-preserved marble head depicting Aphrodite, the ancient Greek goddess of love and beauty, was unearthed during excavations in the ancient city of Aizanoi.

โ€‹Location Correction: Note that while Aizanoi was a major ancient Greek and Roman city, its modern site is located in ร‡avdarhisar, Kรผtahya Province, Turkey (ancient Anatolia/Phrygia), not present-day Greece.

โ€‹Key Highlights of the Discovery

โ€‹The Artifact: The unearthed piece is a 2,000+ year-old carved marble statue head of Aphrodite. It complements headless statue torsos previously discovered at the same site.

โ€‹Excavation Context: Found during riverbed digs near the ancient Penkalas Stream/Bridge area in Aizanoi alongside statue heads of Dionysus (god of w**e).

โ€‹Historical Value: The finds demonstrate that ancient Greek polytheistic culture and sculpture craftsmanship remained deeply vibrant and active into the Roman Imperial period.

Archeologen hebben de restanten van een schip ontdekt in de buurt van het Turkse eiland Kekova bij Antalya. In de potten die achterbleven zitten mogelijk nog restanten van olijfolie of wijn uit die periode.
