The role of a Bicycle Mayor is multifaceted. At times, it involves organising projects and events, joining movements and protests, developing creative ways to communicate a message, or representing their city. This month, we’re spotlighting some of the Bicycle Mayors around the world who, through their presence, voice, and energy, have championed new initiatives and inspired collective action within their communities.
️⃣ Ana Pereira, Bicycle Mayor of Lisbon, Portugal, is supporting Rodas da Inclusão, a project creating a specialised cycling programme for autistic and neurodivergent people. Running until April 2028, it will train 25 instructors across Portugal and teach 300 people how to cycle.
️⃣ Jeffrey Leandro Diaz, Bicycle Mayor of Lima, Peru, recently published Una Luz en el Camino in memory of cyclist Cecilia Melgar Bravo. Proceeds will support safer and more inclusive cycling initiatives, including public art projects that honour road crash victims and promote cycling visibility.
️⃣ Simon, Bicycle Mayor of Warwick, UK, brought 14 Bike Buses together ahead of the final stage of the Women’s Tour of Britain. With music, flags and plenty of noise, the event helped bring more visibility to the movement and created a memorable experience for the children involved.
️⃣ Through the Everyone Rides programme, Mark Anderson, Bicycle Mayor of Hamilton, Canada, organised an adaptive slow ride for seniors and people with mobility needs. Adaptive bikes made it possible for community members of different ages and abilities to enjoy cycling together.
️⃣ Tomas Peciar, Bicycle Mayor of Bratislava, Slovakia, was recently featured in a major Slovak news outlet discussing his community bike workshop and work with children. He also highlighted the importance of bringing Right to Repair into the wider public conversation and the role bike kitchens can play in promoting repair skills and independence.
