Preface: how this project came to be
At the beginning of 2014 I saw a Dutch television program called ‘Rich and poor’ on living conditions in India. One of the topics was child slavery, as is depicted in the movie ‘Slumdog millionaire’, only now it sadly showed this to be reality. Kailash Satyarthi and his team have worked tirelessly
for the past 30 years in order to free over 80,000 kids from their former slave masters. This story touched me deeply and invoked my curiosity towards Kailash’ drive for this cause. The part about child labor starts from the 30th minute. At the start of 2014 I traveled to India with my mother, sister and my brother-in-law. We met Kailash Satyarthi - who won the Nobel Peace Prize in the mean time - and his team of the Global March / Bachpan Bachao Andolan organisation. Moreover, we visited the `Mukti Ashram’ in New Delhi, which is a care center for children who are freed from their slave masters. There is another ashram called `Bal Ashram’ in Jaipur, intended for long stay and schooling of children who are not able to return to their homes due to safety issues. Inspired by Kailash Satyarthi and the deep impressions that the visits left us, we setup a plan to travel to India for 3 months in September 2016 to give trauma treatment to these freed former child slaves on a voluntary basis. The children have endured years of oppression, extortion, mental and physical abuse, which traumatised the children. Therefore they are in desperate need of trauma treatment. Furthermore, we would like to teach the children new coping strategies, such as mindfulness and yoga. Rishma Khubsing
Hoe het idee voor dit initiatief is ontstaan. In maart 2014 zag ik een programma genaamd ‘Arm en rijk’ over levensomstandigheden in India. Een van de onderwerpen was kindslavernij, zoals wij die kennen van bijvoorbeeld van de film ‘Slumdog millionaire’, maar dan spijtig genoeg in het echt. Kailash Satyarthi en zijn team hebben de afgelopen 30 jaar ruim 80.000 kinderen weten te bevrijden van de ‘slave masters’. Dit verhaal heeft mij geraakt en ik was nieuwsgierig naar hetgeen Kailash drijft om zich voor dit doel in te zetten. Dat is de reden dat ik contact heb opgenomen met Kailash. In april 2014 zijn mijn moeder, zus, zwager en ik naar India geweest. Wij hebben toen Kailash Satyarthi, inmiddels Nobelprijs winnaar, van Global March/ Bachpan Bachao Andolan (te zien in het programma) samen met zijn team ontmoet. We zijn ook een dag naar ‘Mukti Ashram’ in New Delhi geweest. Dit is een opvangtehuis waar de kinderen na bevrijding van hun slave masters worden opgevangen. Hiernaast is er nog een ashram ‘Bal Ashram’ in Jaipur, waar kinderen voor langere tijd verblijven en worden opgeleid, als zij niet terug kunnen keren naar huis. Geïnspireerd door Kaillash Satyarthi en omdat deze ontmoetingen veel indruk op ons hebben gemaakt, ga ik in september 2016, voor 3 maanden naar India om traumabehandeling te geven aan de voormalig kindslaven. Hiernaast wil ik hen nieuwe copingsstrategieën aanleren, zoals bijvoorbeeld mindfulnesstechnieken en yoga. Hartelijke groet,
