Guiding us through Gazaโ€™s history by way of its recipes, Laila traced ingredient trade routes since Al Nakba and unpacked the microregional food traditions and adaptations shaped over the last 75 years. As she spoke, chef Salma Barakat prepared tasters of plant-based ๐˜€๐˜‚๐—บ๐—บ๐—ฎ๐—ด๐—ต๐—ถ๐—ฎ for the audience to taste, turning food into memory, testimony, and connection.

A leading voice on food sovereignty, Laila reminds us that Gazan agriculture and cuisine are both weaponised by military occupation and reclaimed as a tool of survival, dignity, and resistance.

Thank you, Laila, for nourishing us โ€” in every sense of the word!

โ€œWHERE IS CULTURAL RESISTANCE NOW? WHERE WAS IT BEFORE?โ€

On the second day of the 2025 PFFA, an inspiring sold out dialogue session was held at De Appel between novelist, poet and playwright Ahmed Masoud and multidisciplinary artist Isshaq Albarbary. Hosted by PFFA house moderator Yara Yuri Safadi, the conversation reclaimed erased pasts, questioning how artistic and cultural resistance determines narratives and how memory is transformed into igniting action.

From Masoudโ€™s questions, โ€œWhere is cultural resistance now? Where was it before?โ€, they discussed counterculture in continuum. This theme was further explored in a fully booked workshop coordinated by Masoud.

In his work, Isshaq Albarbary engages objects and materials from refugee camp infrastructures and humanitarian aid as carriers of what he terms stateless refugee heritage. Joining his hybrid presence, a physical box printed with the UNRWA logo was provided, containing small sugar pieces for tea, which were shaped like comic bones (similar to dog treats).

๐—ฃ๐—ฎ๐—น๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ฒ ๐Ÿฏ๐Ÿฒ is a drama feature directed by Annemarie Jacir , starring Saleh Bakri , Yasmine Al Massri , Hiam Abbas and an acclaimed international cast.

This film dramatises the interconnected struggles of Palestinians against British colonial rule and Zionist settlements in 1936, and is one of the three Palestinian-themed entries at the 2026 Academy Awards.

Annemarie Jacir was unable to attend the sold out Dutch premiere at the IFFR last weekend due to Israeli police attacking screenings of ๐—ฃ๐—ฎ๐—น๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ฒ ๐Ÿฏ๐Ÿฒ at the Yabbous Cultural Center in Jerusalem. She stayed behind to protect the projectionist, who was detained for questioning. This reel is from the second screening, where Annemarie engaged with the audience in an online Q&A.

The Palestinian Film Festival Amsterdam condemns the violent raid by the Israeli Occupation Forces, which imposed a deliberate ban on ๐—ฃ๐—ฎ๐—น๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ฒ ๐Ÿฏ๐Ÿฒ.

In the words of our colleagues at Chicago Palestine Film Festival :
โ€œThis is yet another event that demonstrates the historical pattern of using military force to silence filmmakers and intimidate Palestinian cultural institutions.
We remain steadfast in our commitment to amplify Palestinian voices. We will continue to program, promote, and defend Palestinian cinema โ€” and we urge the global film community to join us in condemning this blatant act of censorship and stand in solidarity with Palestinian filmmakers.โ€

The PFFA is coordinating an exciting collaboration with guests and talks when ๐—ฃ๐—ฎ๐—น๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ฒ ๐Ÿฏ๐Ÿฒ hits the movie theatres. Keep your eye out on this page for updates!

Last weekend several films weโ€™ve been anticipating for months premiered at . ๐—Ÿ๐—ฎ๐˜€๐˜ ๐—ฆ๐—ต๐—ผ๐˜ .film directed by Parham Rahimzadeh and produced by Karim Mrabti portrays the distressing circumstances behind the work of a deceased photojournalist in Gaza. This film featured two wonderful actors Moโ€™min Swaitat and Muhammad Abd El Rahman .ja, who also appeared in the magnificent long-awaited ๐—ฃ๐—ฎ๐—น๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ฒ ๐Ÿฏ๐Ÿฒ directed by Annemarie Jacir . This feature dramatises the interconnected struggles of Palestinians against British colonial rule and Zionist settlements in 1936, and is one of the three Palestinian-themed entries for the 2026 Academy Awards. Iconic Palestinian actress Hiam Abbas joined the audience for the Q&A, after which she starred in the world premiere of Malek Bensmailโ€™s debut feature ๐—ง๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—”๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ฏ. On her last evening she engaged in an intriguing talk moderated by BFI director Kristy Matheson with Valeria Golino , both reflecting back on decades of working in the film industry and the personal challenges of becoming directors.

Although Annemarie Jacir was unable to attend the festival due to attacks by Israeli police during screenings of ๐—ฃ๐—ฎ๐—น๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ฒ ๐Ÿฏ๐Ÿฒ in Jerusalem, we were thrilled to witness a full house at the NL premiere. During the second screening, the audience was mesmerised with Annemarieโ€™s participation in an online Q&A.

Finally, Director Alex Bakri and producer May Odeh screened the touching documentary ๐—›๐—ฎ๐—ฏ๐—ถ๐—ฏ๐—ถ ๐—›๐˜‚๐˜€๐˜€๐—ฒ๐—ถ๐—ป, chronicling a projectionistโ€™s journey throughout the Jenin cinemaโ€™s restoration in the 2000s.

We were intrigued with this yearโ€™s films and delighted that everyone graciously accepted our 2025 PFFA tote bags!

Forty days have passed since we lost legendary actor Mohammad Bakri, who contributed greatly to shaping Palestinian cinema and theatre. Besides his immense talent, Mohammad had a strong sense of humanity and justice, encountering many struggles after the release of his documentary Jenin, Jenin. He felt committed to make a difference and understood art as a form of resistance, fighting the system with unwavering dignity in the face of the occupation.

While most old-timers recall him from the Al Hakawaati theatre, his contribution to Palestinian cinema was paramount over the span of at least four decades. Mohammadโ€™s testimony lives on in our memories and his children, who share his passion for cinema, storytelling and a free Palestine.

We are grateful for the legacy that Mohammed has left behind and all films featuring him that have enriched the PFFA.
