About the Exhibition
Every Line Once Was a Decision presents the intricate ink drawings of Sanem Kalfa, offering an intimate view into an artistic practice guided by intuition, patience, and the acceptance of the unknown.
Rooted in the same creative philosophy that informs her musical compositions, Kalfa's visual work begins without a predetermined image or direction. She allows the process to unfold naturally, following each gesture without analysing or attempting to control its outcome. Acceptance and patience are central to this approach: rather than imposing an idea onto the work, she remains attentive to what emerges.
Working exclusively with black ink, Kalfa creates elaborate organic structures through countless delicate, repetitive gestures. Lines gather, spiral, intersect, and dissolve, suggesting natural phenomena such as currents, roots, cellular formations, and imagined landscapes. Through this meditative process, complexity arises from simplicity, and a delicate equilibrium develops between density and openness.
What begins as an individual mark gradually becomes part of something larger. The resulting compositions carry both the precision of deliberate action and the unpredictability of spontaneous creation.
Despite their intricate detail, these works resist fixed narratives. Their abstract nature invites viewers to move beyond searching for a specific meaning and instead encounter their own associations, memories, and emotions. Each drawing offers a space for contemplation, where interpretation remains personal and possibilities are left open.
Every Line Once Was a Decision is ultimately an exploration of trust in the creative process, where uncertainty is embraced and the accumulation of individual moments gives rise to something unforeseen.
Featured Artwork — Equilibrium
"There is a quiet tension between fullness and emptiness, between what occupies space and what allows it to exist.”
About the Artist
Sanem Kalfa is a Netherlands-based vocalist, cellist, composer, improviser, and visual artist. Originally from Trabzon, on Turkey's Black Sea coast, she has developed a distinctive artistic voice through years of exploration across musical traditions, contemporary improvisation, and interdisciplinary expression.
An established presence in the European contemporary music scene, Kalfa is known for her expressive range, emotionally compelling performances, and adventurous approach to composition. Her work moves fluidly between intimate solo settings and international collaborations, bringing together artists from diverse musical backgrounds.
Her artistic identity has evolved through an ongoing dialogue between cultural memory and experimentation. While her roots remain an important part of her sensibility, her practice is not defined by a single tradition or genre. Instead, she continues to seek new forms of expression, allowing different influences and experiences to coexist and transform.
Alongside her musical career, drawing has developed into an essential part of her creative life. It offers another means of exploring the questions that have long interested her as an artist: how form emerges, how individual elements relate to a larger whole, and how the unexpected can become a source of discovery.
With Every Line Once Was a Decision, her first solo exhibition, Kalfa introduces this deeply personal aspect of her practice to a wider audience, expanding her artistic presence beyond the stage.
