ECSWR Bucharest Abstract Submission is OPEN!!

Theme: Facing The Polycrises - Rethinking The Role of Social Work Research
The world moves visibly and rapidly away from viewing crises as isolated events toward recognizing them as polycrises - multiple interconnected and simultaneous crises, virtually impossible to contain within a single national or institutional framework. Such interconnections have existed throughout history, but today there is increasing awareness of how crises influence and amplify one another. Against this backdrop, the social work profession is once more reflecting on its position, strengths, and challenges in this evolving world order.
In the context of the recent geopolitical events, the rising political turmoil in various (cross)national and local contexts, the polarizing socioeconomic instability and imbalances, increasing armed conflicts and wars, as well as the challenges of AI automation across all human activity, we are witnessing sometimes subtle and other times ostentatious shifts in institutional arrangements, policy provisions and leadership visions. More often than not, these changes lead to the perpetuation of multiple forms of inequity, as well as new discriminatory mechanisms and (yet) hard-to-identify oppressive practices. Read more

New ESWR Co-Editor announcement
Policy press has announced the new Co-Editor of ESWR.

We are pleased to introduce the new Co-Editor of European Social Work Research; Panagiotis Pentaris. Panagiotis Pentaris is an Associate Professor of Social Work & Thanatology, and Academic Lead of Research and Ethics and Postgraduate Research Lead at Goldsmiths University, London.

“It is an honour to be joining ESWR at a time when social work research is expanding in scope, complexity and impact. I look forward to supporting innovative, interdisciplinary work that not only reflects the realities of contemporary social issues but also shapes the future directions of our field.”

The main theme of the 15th European Conference for Social Work Research is “Social Work and Interdisciplinary Research: researching and facilitating evidence informed practice and policy”

Researchers, scholars, practitioners, and students are invited to submit abstracts for the following types of proposal, Oral Paper Presentation, Poster Presentation, Symposium, Workshop. Abstract submission deadline is 26th September 2025

Call for Co-Editor of European Social Work Research (ESWR)
Application deadline: 30 September 2025

The Editorial Management Board of European Social Work Research (ESWR) invites applications for a Co-Editor to work alongside the Editor-in-Chief, Lars Uggerhøj (Aalborg University) and Co-Editor, Ana M. Sobočan (University of Ljubljana). The successful applicant will succeed Elaine Sharland, who is stepping down as Co-Editor after overseeing the launch of the journal in 2023 and three successful years of publication.

ESWR is published by Policy Press on behalf of the European Social Work Research Association (ESWRA). This is an excellent opportunity for a current member of ESWRA to take part in publishing the Association’s flagship journal.

ESWRA members are invited to vote for 4 Board members
You may be aware that 2026 will mark a period of transition for the Board, as several members’ terms of office come to an end. In planning for this transition, we are keen to ensure that the already strong membership of the ESWRA Board is further strengthened and, as a result, the Board has agreed to expand its membership by 4 Board members who have time to take on an active role, the skills to build capacity within the Board and contribute to the effective running of Board related business. Their term will be for 2 years.

Call for Special Interest Group Events

The SIG events will be held on Wednesday 15th April 2026. We invite you to send us an expression of interest before 12 September 2025, please let us know:

• If you will be organizing a SIG event
• if the event will be run as half a day (2.5 hours) or a full day (5 hours);
• if the event is half a day, would you prefer - morning 9:30 to 12:00 or afternoon 13:00 to 15:30

We have a wide range of rooms available, but there is still a limit. While we will aim to accommodate all SIGs if we don’t have sufficient space to do so we’ll allocate on a first submitted first allocated basis.
In the first instance please submit your expression of interest via the SIGs Submission Portal answering the points above.
