Here we introduce you to the two other documentary films along with the 2026 PMSFF granted films we are screening on 19 September 2026 at RCSD center, Chiang Mai University.
1. No Laughing Matter, directed by Pe Maung Same.
Through rediscovered tape recordings made in 1996, U Pe Thein, a renowned political cartoonist, leads us on a journey about the history of politics and cartoons in Myanmar.
This was Ko Same's final documentary he directed, made about his own father — a renowned satirical cartoonist from Myanmar's socialist era. Screening it this year is a way of honoring not only his life's work, but the story closest to his heart.
We would like to show our gratitude to the family members of Ko Pe Maung Same and the film's production for kindly letting us screen this film again.
2. On Holiday, directed by Shin Daewe.
This was filmed more than 15 years ago. These are scenes that can no longer be seen today.
Ma Shin Daewe is one of Myanmar's pioneering female documentary filmmakers, known for works such as 'Now I Am 13' and 'Take Me Home'. She was imprisoned for over two years on alleged terrorism charges connected to her filmmaking before being released earlier this year. We are honored that she has generously offered this film for our screening.
Documentary filmmaking in Myanmar continues to face significant underfunding, a situation made worse by recent cuts to international aid. The Pe Maung Same Film Fund remains one of the only initiatives of its kind supporting Myanmar's documentary filmmakers.
This year, we simply invite you to join us — to watch, to remember, and to help these stories reach further by sharing this event with others who care about truth, memory, and the power of film. Your presence and support in spreading the word matters as much as any donation.
For inquiries, donations, support, or collaboration, please contact the Pe Maung Same Film Fund at [email protected] .
