You take climate change seriously and support cutting emissions. Yet you find yourself labelled a “climate denier”. That happened to Roger Pielke Jr., even though his research was consistent with IPCC assessments.
Speaking at Clintel in Driebergen, the Netherlands, on 11 October, he described what followed: attacks from the Obama White House, a congressional investigation and colleagues who became reluctant to associate with him.
What had he done? Investigated whether rising losses from hurricanes and other weather disasters could be attributed to climate change. Greater losses do not automatically mean more extreme weather. More people and more valuable property in vulnerable places also make a big difference.
In this lecture, Pielke walks through the evidence on heatwaves, hurricanes, floods and droughts. They do not all tell the same story. He also explains why he challenges the event attribution studies that make headlines shortly after disasters.
Around 57 minutes of clear explanations and a frank account of his own experiences. Worth watching, even if you don’t agree with him on everything.
