wn as Afghanistan after hearing of the killing of a spiritual brother and friend of mine, Lee Shapiro, while he was filming for a documentary about the situation in Afghanistan during the Soviet occupation. His party was attacked by a Soviet helicopter gunship when he was travelling to interview Ahmad Shah Massoud. My love of Persian culture was fed by my friendship with writer & singer Shusha Guppy and the writings of Rumi, and I became more practically involved through friendships with Afghanistani expatriates living in Amsterdam.
