Radio La Benevolencija Radio La Benevolencija HTF runs edutainment campaigns to make audiences resilient to hate speech

Radio La Benevolencija aims to empower citizens in countries affected by mass violence to act as critical consumers of media messages. By raising awareness about the effects of their own fears on their actions, to know how to resist those influences and keep a clear head and to act to prevent them from influencing their peers. This knowledge and behavioural change strengthens the psychological fou

ndations for peaceful interaction between citizens and authorities. Knowledge of trauma, its effects and ways to heal it, is closely related to violence prevention. Therefore, La Benevolencija also trains its audience in a community-based trauma treatment method. We combine knowledge of behaviourist principles with recognition of traumatizing factors to attempt a kind of “mental inoculation” against incitement to violence.

🧠 Think you're objective? Think again!

As part of the LIGHT Project, we asked participants un our workshops to explore real-life situations where unconscious bias influences decisions - and the examples that came up were all too familiar 👇

📌 Job Interviews: Applicants with non-Western names are often less likely to get a callback - even with identical CVs.
📌 Performance Reviews: Research shows that gender, race, and parental status can impact how managers rate performance.
📌 Justice: Even trial judges can be unconsciously influenced by race.
📌 Policing: Studies confirm disparities in stops and searches across racial lines.
📌 Education: Teachers may have lower expectations for students based on their background.
📌 Media & Advertising: Representation and stereotypes matter more than we think.

These biases are hard to see but powerful. That’s why we’re working to make them as recognisable as possible - so we can challenge them together.

🚨Attention youth workers, educators, and anyone passionate about shaping an inclusive future!🚨

As part of the LIGHT Consortium, we've been supporting the creation of something special - a toolkit with 30 educational tools designed to tackle invisible racism and unconscious biases. Think of it as your go-to resource for sparking meaningful conversations with young people.

One our favorites? Storytelling exercises! Stories have this magic ability to sneak past our defences, tap into our emotions, and make us see things from new perspectives. And that’s exactly what we need to break biases and build bridges. 🌍❤️

Check out the toolkit and follow the LIGHT project and get ready to dive into some seriously powerful tools!

The LIGHT Consortium has worked on creating a toolkit consisting of 30 educational tools. This comprehensive resource presents key concepts, learning methodologies, and innovative exercises to help youth workers raise awareness among young people about invisible racism, unconscious biases, and initiate meaningful discussions on these topics.
For example, this toolkit includes five storytelling exercises. Storytelling is an excellent tool that engages multiple areas of our brain and appeals to our emotions.

simplifies a complex world by filling in gaps with assumptions rather than facts. While this might make quick judgments easier, it often leads to unfair treatment and missed opportunities.

🔎 We use labels to simplify our world, but they often limit understanding and perpetuate stereotypes. 🔎

- A student labeled a “nerd” might be overlooked for an internship because they’re seen as bookish rather than social.
- Someone seen as “too aggressive” in meetings may not be considered for management, even if they have strong leadership potential.
- A person labeled as “shy” might be excluded from group activities, assuming they don’t want to participate.

Labels dictate how others perceive and interact with us - and worse still they often stick - regardless of who we truly are. By questioning these stereotypes, we can prevent them from shaping unfair decisions in workplaces, schools and communities.

What labels have you noticed being unfairly applied to others—or even yourself? Share your thoughts below!

- Research by Jennifer Eberhardt highlights how labels distort perceptions, affecting our judgments unconsciously (Psychology Today).
- Studies like Darley and Gross’s show how stereotypes influence assumptions, even with identical evidence (Psychology Today).
- Findings from the University of Toronto demonstrate how stereotyping creates lasting negative effects, perpetuating inequalities (ScienceDaily).
