The world committed to ending AIDS as a public health threat by 2030. But how does that commitment become action?

Every five years, a Global AIDS Strategy is developed to guide the response. The latest strategy, covering 2026–2031, was commissioned by the UNAIDS Board in December 2025.

Now, it moves to the United Nations, where Member States will come together at the 2026 High-Level Meeting on HIV and AIDS to negotiate and adopt the commitments that will shape the global HIV response for the next five years.

This is where global ambition meets political action.

Communities have historically played a vital role in the HIV response, championing the concept of self-care as a pathway to health, dignity, and autonomy through peer support, treatment literacy and community-led care.

On 3rd June 2026, GNP+ through Co-ED will be speaking at a webinar by the Self-Care Trailblazer Group to discuss the role of self-care in the HIV movement and why it must remain a priority in discussions leading up to the 2026 UN High-Level Meeting on HIV/AIDS.

"As we commemorate the 2026 International AIDS
Candlelight Memorial, we honor the generations of people living with HIV whose courage transformed fear into hope, silence into advocacy, and stigma into solidarity. Their legacy reminds us that the fight against HIV is not only about survival, but about dignity, equity, and justice. Today, we recommit ourselves to advancing people-centered responses, protecting human rights, and ensuring that no one is left behind. Together, we light the legacy by remembering, advancing, and acting."

"The International AIDS Candlelight Memorial is a moment to remember every life lost to AIDS. It is a moment for us to honour the courage of communities who carried the response through its hardest times and for us to renew our commitment to an AIDS-free future where all people living with HIV live long and healthy lives. During these times of disruption and uncertainty we stand with all people living with HIV to celebrate how solidarity, science and compassion always overcome indifference and discrimination". - Dr Tereza Kasaeva, - WHO
