As the world grapples with growing geopolitical tensions, climate-related disruptions and rapid technological change, this article offers a thought-provoking perspective on the state of global peace.

The 2026 Global Peace Index (GPI) highlights a world facing the economic consequences of a record number of increasingly interconnected conflicts, driven by geopolitical fragmentation and a rapid transformation in warfare where technology is outpacing international law and diplomacy.

The report explores how these shifts are reshaping the global landscape, with implications that extend far beyond security and defence to economies, institutions and societies around the world. It is a valuable read for anyone interested in the long-term trends shaping our collective future.

The Global Alliance for Banking on Values (GABV) extends its heartfelt condolences and support to all those affected by the recent earthquake in Colombia and Ecuador. We are deeply saddened by the loss, displacement and disruption experienced by communities across the region, and our thoughts are with everyone facing the difficult task of recovery and rebuilding.

We have been in contact with our members in the region. While our Ecuadorian member Banco Codesarrollo has reported more limited impacts, we are especially thinking of our colleagues at our Colombian member Banco Mundo Mujer, who have shared the significant impact the earthquake has had on their staff, branches and the communities they serve.

The situation is particularly poignant given the institution's own origins. Banco Mundo Mujer traces its roots to the aftermath of the 1983 PopayΓ‘n earthquake, when Leonor Melo de Velasco and a group of women leaders came together to support families that had lost their livelihoods. What began as a community response to a natural disaster evolved into one of Colombia's leading values-based financial institutions.

For more than four decades, Banco Mundo Mujer has demonstrated how finance can help communities recover, rebuild and thrive. Today, as parts of Colombia and Ecuador once again face the challenges brought by a devastating earthquake, we are reminded of the resilience and solidarity that inspired the institution's founding and continue to guide its work.

On behalf of the entire GABV community, we send our solidarity and support to Banco Mundo Mujer, Banco Codesarrollo and to all those affected across Colombia and Ecuador. πŸ’š

🌱 Where your money sleeps at night matters.

Every dollar we deposit helps shape the future. Yet many people don't realise that their bank deposits can carry a carbon footprint comparable to some of their biggest lifestyle choices.

That's why Climate First Bank has launched a new Deposit Impact Calculator, helping people visualise the potential environmental impact of moving their money from a large Wall Street bank to a mission-driven financial institution focused on financing climate solutions.

The tool also highlights the potential financial benefits of making the switch, demonstrating that values and financial returns can go hand in hand. Created in collaboration with Topo Finance, We Are Neutral and OneEthos, it offers a practical way to understand how banking choices can drive positive change.

From expanding access to capital in rural and Native communities to supporting affordable housing and community development, Sunrise Banks demonstrates how banking can be a force for good.

Buildings account for nearly 39% of global energy-related carbon emissions. But for some values-based banks, the response goes beyond financing sustainable buildings. They're creating them too.

From geothermal heating and rainwater harvesting to circular design and timber construction, GABV member banks are showing how their workplaces can reflect the values behind their financing decisions.

What happens when fossil fuel expansion can qualify for a sustainable investment label?

In this thought-provoking Forbes article, Ingmar Rentzhog, founder and CEO of We Don't Have Time, examines proposed changes to the EU's Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation (SFDR) that could allow companies expanding oil and gas production to be included in certain "transition" investment products.

The debate highlights a critical question for policymakers, investors and financial institutions: how do we ensure sustainable finance frameworks drive genuine impact and maintain public trust?
