🌟 Let’s create the good news together: Raising 10,000 Earth Smiles

This year, we’re relaunching our campaign to raise awareness for our water bunds, or as we like to call them . For every Earth Smile you buy, you will regreen about 124 m² of land. 🌱

Our goal? To raise 10,000 Earth Smiles and 1,240,000 m² of land in Samburu County, Northern 🇰🇪. By digging Earth Smiles, we’re not only restoring degraded land, but also supporting local communities vulnerable to recurring droughts. 🧑🏿‍🌾

The urgency is real, and the time to act is now. Dig in and donate now to make the good news happen! 💚

Because we’re a Gen Z social media team, we think long captions aren’t needed. The regreening impact speaks for itself - just look at the transformation ✨🌱.

What happens when communities come together to regreen their landscapes? 🌱

At Nkiramat Nkujit in Kalama Community Conservancy, a women-led group of 30 members is helping degraded rangelands while creating livelihood opportunities through commercial grass seed production. 🌾

What was once bare and degraded land is slowly turning green again, thanks to community-led restoration, reseeding resilient native grasses, and strengthening drought resilience across surrounding landscapes.

Sometimes, the most impactful solutions are not the most complicated - just consistent community stewardship, local knowledge, and giving a chance to recover 💚.

No more bad news. Good news is on the way ✨

This is the transformation of , Kenya 🇰🇪 in just four months, following a rainy season. By digging and filling them with rainwater 🌧️, they give the soil more time to absorb water and help vegetation sprout - turning dry land green again 🌱.

What makes this special? These were dug through the 2024 campaign. Thanks to your support and donations, this was made possible.

Bad news can always become good news, and we can create that change together. This year, we’re back to make more good news happen. Stay tuned until 28 May (next Thursday), something good is coming! 👀

Did you know that techniques can also be used on farmland to improve harvests? 🧑🏿‍🌾

This is Fanya Juu Fanya Chini, meaning “throw it up” and “throw it down” in Swahili. These trenches are dug along slopes to retain rainwater, increasing water availability for crops and leading to more fruitful harvests. At the same time, they prevent rainwater from flowing downstream too quickly, which helps reduce soil erosion 🌧️

When farmers implement regreening techniques like these, they are better able to support their livelihoods and provide for their families through more stable harvests.

Green returns where we dig 🌱

have proven to be an effective technique to bring green back to the landscape. By simply digging Earth Smiles and waiting for nature to do its work - that’s all it takes for vegetation to return 🌱 and transform Selela village, 🇹🇿, from bare to green.

From the image above, you can also spot the difference between the areas where were dug and where they weren’t 👀.

Regreening… but not how you think 🌱

At Justdiggit, we regreen degraded land in Sub-Saharan Africa, but do you really understand our techniques? Time to debunk a few regreening myths 👇:

🌳 We don’t plant trees, we recover them. Through , we regrow cut tree stumps and support new sprouts through pruning.
🌾 We don’t use any seeds to regreen, we work with native species from , managed by Maasai women groups. They harvest and sell seeds locally for income, and we also purchase them for our regreening projects.
👨🏿‍🌾 We don’t own the land, local communities do. Farmers manage the land and carry out the work, building commitment and ensuring sustainability.
💪 We don’t rely on big machinery, we keep it simple. are dug by pastoralists using shovels, making the technique accessible, low-cost, and easy to replicate.
🤝 We don’t just talk about , we do it! Together with farmers and partners, we’ve regreened more than 500,000 hectares of degraded land - and the impact keeps growing.

So, how well did you understand our work? No more talking. This is the decade of doing!

Do you remember the transformation of this landscape over the years?

Thanks to the technique, Esilalei has been slowly brought back to life, with the green gradually returning to the land 🌱

That said, takes time. One rainy season isn’t enough to turn bare land into a lush landscape 🌧️, and changes aren’t always immediately visible. Still, the process continues: the soil is improving and life is returning step by step.

This is what progress really looks like: change starts with action and grows with patience. With time, and with the rains, positive results will follow. 💚

You just see a tree 👀? We see the opportunity behind it! 🌱

This is one of our (Kisiki Hai) trees, not just any tree, but one re-growing from previously cut-down stumps. With this technique, we’re bringing trees back to life and restoring degraded land. 🌳

And it doesn’t stop there… As the tree grows, it creates shade that cools the land, reduces heat stress of crops, and prevents water from evaporating 💦. It also supports new and gradually rebuilds the , attracting birds and insects back home.

So as the tree grows… life grows with it! 🌱💚

🌱 Same land, different life

This is what the land looks like when it’s given a second chance to grow 👀. Here, you can see the remarkable of Enkii village in just half a year. This is thanks to , which capture rainwater, giving the soil time to absorb it and bring back vegetation. 🌧️🌱

But you can’t see the Earth Smiles anymore? That’s because as vegetation grows, it gradually spreads beyond them, covering the landscape in green. So… simple in approach, yet powerful in impact.
