Women’s Labour Activism in Eastern Europe and Beyond presents an inclusive history of activism from the mid-nineteenth to the late twentieth century. This collaborative monograph explores women's actions and organising to improve the working conditions and living circumstances of lower-income and working-class women and their communities.

On 6 October, Susan Zimmermann and Ivelina Masheva, two of the book's ten authors, will discuss its key themes. IISG-colleagues Karin Hofmeester, Aad Blok and Rosa Kösters will act as discussants. Come and join us for the book presentation!

Kort geleden nam Leo Lucassen afscheid sls directeur bij het IISG, vandaag houdt hij zijn afscheidscollege bij Universiteit Leiden. Hij blijft echter onvermoeibaar doorgaan met het corrigeren van onwaarheden over migratie. Zoals in het mooie interview dat recentelijk in de Volkskrant stond.

De kinderen van Turkse en Marokkaanse migranten doen het hartstikke goed. ‘Maar dat zijn feiten die nauwelijks doordringen. Er wordt enorm gefocust op wat fout gaat. Het maakt het debat moeizaam, wat ook geldt voor de positie van wetenschappers die onderzoek doen naar migratie en integratie en hun kennis willen laten doordringen.’

MarxismNL is organising its first conference at the IISG from 7 to 9 October!

As we witness a new era of rising fascism, imperialist wars and counterrevolutionary crackdowns, we find ourselves desperately looking for the emergency brake. In this context, Marxist critique could help to understand our current social conditions as moments of capitalist crisis, and to build futures founded on solidarity and liberation.

The 2026 MarxismNL research conference offers a forum for dialogue across disciplinary boundaries, collective organizing, and popularizing Marxist perspectives. Many IISG-colleagues will present papers on global labour history, rebellion in Latin America, labour environmentalism, African liberation movements and social movements and scientific publishing.

Join us tomorrow to explore our new exhibition and listen to talks on the First International and the emerging global anarchist movement, of which a group of 19th-century Swiss watchmakers found themselves in the midst of.

The video installation Assemblez-Reassemblez! (United Anarchist Archives) is based on a journey through archives and libraries specializing in social history and anarchism all over Europe in search of the watchmakers' publication called Bulletin de La Fédération jurassienne. These journeys and conversations with local archivists, historians and watchmakers form the basis of the installation.

🗺️ Navigeren door het Nederland van 1832? Dat kan met HisGIS.nl. Achter ieder perceel schuilt een verhaal.

HisGIS.nl digitaliseert het oudste kadaster van Nederland: zo'n 3 miljoen percelen, met informatie over wie waar woonde, welke grond iemand bezat en waarvoor die werd gebruikt. Voor ruim twee derde van het land kun je dit nu al vrij raadplegen, gewoon vanachter je eigen computer.

Wat kun je ermee?
🌳 Ontdek hoe ons landschap veranderde: ecologen vergelijken de kaarten van toen met het landgebruik van nu en zien waar bossen, heide en beekdalen verdwenen of terugkwamen. Cruciaal voor natuurherstel en archeologisch onderzoek.
🏘️ Onderzoek sociaal-economische geschiedenis: welke wijken waren dichtbevolkt en arm, waar sloegen epidemieën het hardst toe en wie bezat eigenlijk de grond?

In the Swiss Jura of the nineteenth century, a group of willful watchmakers were at work. As well as making timepieces, they were anarchists. The video installation Assemblez-Reassemblez! (United Anarchist Archives), which will be on display at the IISG from 24 September, is based on a journey through archives and libraries specializing in social history and anarchism all over Europe in search of the watchmakers' publications called Bulletin de La Fédération jurassienne. These journeys and conversations with local archivists, historians and watchmakers form the basis of the installation.

At the opening, artist Nienke Terpsma will introduce the research using a number of videos they made on their travels. IISG-colleage Ad Knotter discusses the First International, focusing on the 1872 congress in The Hague, where the historical split occurred between the Marxists and the anarchists. Historian Florian Eitel will provide an overview of the social context of the watchmaking industry in the Swiss Jura around 1870, and argues how globalisation lay at the heart of the emerging worldwide anarchist movement and the new form of social revolutionary thought.

Whether you prefer to work individually or in collaboration with another researcher, there are several ways to share your findings with a wider audience:

Create a collection of scans and write a short introduction (100–150 words)

🔹 Contribute a theme page
Write a short informative text on a specific theme using the GLOBALISE tools and resources (1000 words)

🔹 Voices beyond the VOC: A Co-Writing Project
Sign up, get paired with another writer, and write a short article together (1000-1500 words). A chance to collaborate with another researcher, gain early access to more advanced GLOBALISE tools, and be published on the new GLOBALISE research portal
