Join for Joy

Join for Joy Playful education builds the next generation. 🤸🏾‍♀️

Join for Joy believes in the power of playful learning and has developed a Sports and Play program for primary school teachers in the rural areas of Kenya, Zambia, Malawi, and Uganda. They learn how to implement sports and play activities in the school curriculum effectively to 1) motivate children to come to school and stay at school and 2) to discuss taboo topics, such as malaria, HIV, sexual vi

olence, teen pregnancies, or gender (in)equality with children in a playful way. Teachers discover how to create a safe learning environment at school and act how to as positive role models. As a result: more children come to school and stay at school all day; awareness of social issues and disease prevention; inclusion of girls and children with physical or mental disabilities; fewer teenage pregnancies; better focus in class and learning material is easier to remember; children perform better at school; fewer dropouts and more children who finish primary education; children are better able to deal with daily challenges and grow up as resilient boys and girls with a positive future perspective.

Often, the best way to create change is to experience it yourself.

That's why we love using role play during our teacher training sessions. By stepping into the shoes of parents and learners, teachers experience firsthand how to respond to different situations, support children who need extra attention, and create safe and inclusive learning environments.

Happy Menstrual Health Day 2026! You probably know what a menstrual cup is and how it is used. But do you know the journey it takes before it reaches a girl at school?

In this video, we follow the journey of a donated Ruby Cup menstrual cup. From donation to distribution, our Menstrual Health Heroes in Zambia and Malawi make sure every cup reaches the girls who need it most. They train teachers how to talk about menstruation and the use of the cup, so they can share this knowledge with girls in their class.

To everyone who works together to make this possible: thank you for being part of this journey!

Let’s talk about menstruation! 🩸

Ahead of Menstrual Hygiene Day 2026, we screened Impure - Film at Maamba Special School in Zambia. The film tells the story of twelve-year-old June from Kenya, who faces exclusion and shame when she gets her first period at school.

After the screening, teachers and girls shared their thoughts and experiences around menstruation and the stigma surrounding it. The discussion showed that menstruation is different for everyone, and that with the right information and products, everybody can experience their period safely and with dignity.

" I believe learning is a lifelong process!" 💪

Teacher Moses teaches Grades 3, 4, and 5 at Mount Olive School in Kenya. He recently started the Join for Joy teacher training program to explore using playful learning in his classroom and shared his experience: “I will be able to capture their attention, and retention of knowledge! Exciting news from Join for Joy Malawi!

Join for Joy Malawi has extended its Playful Learning Programme to Dowa District, promoting the use of sports-based methods in teaching.

The programme was first introduced in Mchinji District, where it remains in operation.

Join for Joy Malawi country director James Wilson Phiri said the initiative is designed to integrate structured play into classroom practice to enhance learner engagement, inclusivity and effectiveness in teaching.

He said 60 primary school teachers from Kafumphe and Chibwata education zones in the district have been trained to apply playful learning approaches that support creativity, critical thinking, collaboration and active participation.

Phiri added that 31 primary education advisors and inspectors also underwent a two-day training workshop.

Director of education and sports for Dowa Christopher Kumikundi welcomed the initiative, noting its potential to improve learning outcomes.

Teachers use play as a driver for inclusive school environments at Kalundu Primary School! Teacher Mabel tells us that the atmosphere at the school has improved significantly. Children have gained more confidence and participate more actively in class, both during the Join for Joy games and during regular lessons.

"There is less stigma for children with disabilities now, and more collaboration." When we visited Kalundu Primary School, it was especially inspiring to see how teachers actively include children with disabilities in the play activities. In total, 11 children with disabilities attend the school, and the games are helping them connect more easily with their classmates.
