Read our latest news & editorial piece about militarisation in the EU here 📝

Russia has invaded Ukraine, Trump continues to threaten Greenland, and international law seems almost immaterial. The EU, once a promoter of peace and international cooperation, has become increasingly militarised. What does this mean for young people?

Read our latest news & editorial piece about ICE here 📝

Immigration detention has expanded dramatically beyond border control. With operations now taking place in pre-schools, residential areas, workplaces, and on streets, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is increasingly invading people’s everyday lives far from the border.

The ongoing uprisings in Iran began on 28th of December 2025, as a protest by the shopkeepers and merchants of the Tehran Grand Bazaar against the back-breaking inflation and the rapid devaluation of the Iranian currency.

Danyal Alyari from the News & Editorial committee delves into the recent protests and explores the devastating impact of the government's response to these protests on the Iranian people.

📖🕯 In our second short-form news article post, we review a book called Perfect Victims by Mohammed El-Kurd, a Palestinian writer and poet.

This book explores the dehumanization Palestinians face on a daily basis. Our very experienced Behram İlbey Alp from the news & editorial committee has written this review of the book. Adam Humphreys from the promotion committee designed the post.

In 2018, journalist Jamāl Khāshqujī was murdered and dismembered inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.
U.S. intelligence later concluded that Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman likely approved the operation. The CIA, the UN Special Rapporteur, and multiple independent investigations tied the killing directly to the highest levels of the Saudi state.

During MBS’s visit to Washington Last week, Trump chose to believe the Crown Prince over his own intelligence services. He dismissed the CIA’s findings, insisting MBS “knew nothing”, and scolded reporters who dared to bring up the murder.

Instead of demanding accountability, Trump offered MBS praise, arms deals, and a full red-carpet welcome.

This visit marks a deliberate rehabilitation of MBS’s image on the international stage, a normalisation that erases the brutality of the crime and signals that assassinations of journalists can be forgiven for the sake of Saudi business.

Last but not least in our series on the Write for Rights cases is Sai Zaw Thaike.

Photojournalist Sai Zaw was arrested and sentenced for reporting on a cyclone in Myanmar. He is not the first journalist to be imprisoned; the military has imprisoned over 200. Instead of being free, Sai Zaw is locked up and beaten. Journalists around the world are being silenced, killed, and jailed. We must demand the immediate release of Sai Zaw.

During the Write for Rights sessions in VU, AUC, and UvA on 2 - 4th December, you will get the chance to demand that the military release Sai Zaw Thaike immediately. He has been sentenced to 20 years in jail solely for his work.

Seventh in our series on the Write for Rights cases is Ellinor Guttorm Utsi. We will post all eight cases over the coming days and weeks.

Ellinor, an Indigenous Sami woman, is fighting to protect her community, which follows seasonal migration routes across the Arctic and relies on grazing lands in Čorgaš. However, this land is under threat. The Norwegian government has proposed building hundreds of wind turbines across Sami territory, which would disrupt reindeer migration and destroy the community's way of life. Time is running out, so we must call for the protection of the land, livelihoods, and culture.

During the Write for Rights sessions in VU, AUC, and UvA on 2 - 4th December, you will get the chance to demand that the rights of the Sámi reindeer-herding communities are protected by ensuring industrial wind-power projects that threaten their lands and way of life do not proceed without the free, prior and informed consent of the affected Sámi.

Sixth in our series on the Write for Rights cases is Sonia Dahmani. We will post all eight cases over the coming days and weeks.

Sonia, a human rights lawyer, has been imprisoned for speaking out against racism and inhumane prison conditions. The Tunisian authorities have groundlessly charged her with "spreading fake news". Beyond the obvious attempt to silence her for protecting human rights, she is continuously mistreated in prison: her cell is infested with rats, and she is denied the medicine she needs. Her health is only getting worse, so we must act now!

During the Write for Rights sessions in VU, AUC, and UvA on 2 - 4th December, you will get the chance to demand that the Tunisian authorities immediately and unconditionally release Sonia Dahmani, lift the sentences and drop all charges against her.

Fifth in our series on the Write for Rights cases is Mother Nature Cambodia. We will post all eight cases over the coming days and weeks.

The activist group Mother Nature Cambodia successfully halted projects that would have been extremely harmful towards the environment. Throughout this process, the authorities repeatedly targeted the group with arrests and prosecutions.

In 2024, five of the activists were sentenced to prison sentences, ranging from 6 to 8 years. No one should be prosecuted for protecting the planet. We demand the immediate release of the five activists.

During the Write for Rights sessions in VU, AUC, and UvA on 2 - 4th December, you will get the chance to demand that the five detained activists be immediately and unconditionally released, and all convictions against Mother Nature Cambodia activists be overturned.
