As AI continues to evolve, understanding both its potential and its challenges will be essential for its responsible use in blood donor management.

How are blood products actually being used when patients with hemorrhagic shock are treated in the ICU?

This study looked at real-world transfusion and resuscitation practices across public ICU datasets.

The findings show considerable variation in hemoglobin levels, fluid administration and hemodynamic status at the time of transfusion.

The study highlights how much we still need to learn about the optimal approach to resuscitation in the ICU, and the need for further research in this area.

How can platelet inventory management be optimized using a simple, standardized decision-support model?

A retrospective study from a Regional Blood Centre shows that a straightforward, Excel-based approach can make a substantial difference.

📊 Over a 10-year period, implementation of the model reduced platelet outdating from 1.86% to just 0.04%.

Key elements included:
🔹 Integrating ABO group distribution in the population
🔹 Daily monitoring of platelet inventory
🔹 Flexible use of group AB platelets
🔹 Increased use of apheresis and pathogen-inactivated platelets
🔹 Reducing reliance on cryopreserved and modified platelet products

The findings demonstrate how data-driven, standardized inventory decisions can improve platelet availability while minimizing wastage and increasing operational flexibility.

A new study evaluates the first six months of Australia’s plasma pathway following changes to source plasma donation eligibility related to sexual activity and HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP).

The study found that:

- More than 6,600 source plasma donations were collected that would otherwise not have been eligible.

- There were no detections of HIV, hepatitis B or hepatitis C.

- The findings suggest that a dedicated plasma pathway could offer an opportunity for people currently ineligible to donate transfusable components because of PrEP use or sexual activity to donate plasma instead.

The authors encourage blood services to consider whether a similar approach could help expand the donor pool while maintaining blood safety.
