Het museum heeft in het souterrain een unieke winkel met een geweldige aanbod voor de pijproker: drieduizend moderne bruyère pijpen en alle soorten geurige tabak. In de sfeervolle ambiance van een historisch Amsterdams grachtenhuis, toont het Amsterdam Pipe Museum een overzicht van mode en design in rookpijpen. De expositie omvat een periode van 2500 jaar met spannende objecten uit vijf continenten. De mogelijkheid van een persoonlijke rondleiding maakt van uw bezoek een onverwachte beleving! Het Amsterdam Pipe Museum is ook het kenniscentrum over het pijproken en de wereldwijde cultuur daarvan. Het museum geeft boeken uit, maakt publicaties en adviseert over het onderwerp. In het souterrain is de museumwinkel gevestigd met een onverwachte keuze aan moderne pijpen voor pijprokers. Voor de echte liefhebber zijn er verzamelaarsitems en antiquiteiten tussen rokerskunst en rokerskitsch.

Ceramic Museum Prinsessehof in Leeuwarden is organizing an exhibition for which a pipe is required. Of course we could serve them with the perfect specimen. This week a transport firm came to collect this loan. It is in good hands, professionally handled and packed. Next time we'll show the pipe on view.

Today is World Tourism Day!

Some visitors to the Amsterdam Pipe Museum make quite a journey before they arrive.

Take this pipe smoker from Taiwan, who lives in Japan and travelled all the way to Amsterdam. After adding a new pipe to his collection, he asked our curator for a selfie to remember his visit.

For World Maritime Day, we’re setting sail through the Pipe Museum Collection, with a fleet of ships on ceramic and porcelain pipes — tiny vessels, frozen in time and decorated with remarkable detail.

🐉 And finally… every good voyage needs a monster.
Because beneath the surface, you never quite know what you might find.

“Invest in Peace — For Everyone, Everywhere, Every Day.”

The theme of this year’s International Day of Peace invites us all to do our part for peace.
In our collection, we found a small object that carries a surprisingly powerful message.

This cardboard to***co pipe has a meerschaum-lined bowl, a metal base and a simple reed stem. Printed on the front are the words:

“PIPE OF PEACE
WAR IS HELL
WE WANT TO LIVE IN PEACE WITH THE WORLD,
IF WE MAY KEEP LIBERTY.”

According to Het Vaderland of 29 March 1939, thousands of these pipes had been distributed by an Englishman after his son was killed in the First World War.

Tomorrow, 19 September, thousands of people in Amsterdam will come together for “A Percussion Piece for 3045 Players”, making music with drums, percussion instruments and everyday objects — a collective gesture of solidarity with Belarus.

We’ll join in our own way, with pipes whose bowls are shaped like little drums.

One month after the passing of Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama, we wanted to pay homage in our own way. So we went looking through our collection for dots — and found these French and Belgian clay pipes, dating from the 1860s to the 1930s, decorated with stippled enamel.

#6 Museo Mallorca, Palma de Mallorca
Painting by Joan Bauzà Mas, a local painter known for his genre and historical scenes.

This Mediterranean fisherman is smoking a pipe that is barely visible. It may well have been a simple, homemade pipe, perhaps fashioned from an ordinary piece of wood.

Our museum collection doesn’t have a pipe quite this simple, but the one illustrated here is perhaps the closest match we have.

Over the past few weeks, we had the pleasure of welcoming Lukas Hensing to the Amsterdam Pipe Museum as an intern.
We arranged this internship because we believe we can learn from each other.

In addition to being a history student in Bremen, Germany, Lukas is also a pipe maker — he made his first pipe at the age of just 15!
As promised, Lukas gave us new insights into the assessment of a proper smoking pipe.

Remembering Dolly Parton, who passed away yesterday at 80.

This rare carved pipe immortalizes the country music icon in a traditional smoking object — a particularly fitting connection for the daughter of a to***co farmer.
