What does the ground unleash when it is denied keeping what it holds? How does soil get implicated in the carrying of catastrophe? And how does continuous excavation for artefacts reveal an obsession to erase history in order to create a new one?

We will be screening Dina Mimiโ€™s short film ๐˜›๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜Œ๐˜บ๐˜ฆ๐˜ด ๐˜›๐˜ฉ๐˜ข๐˜ต ๐˜•๐˜ฆ๐˜ท๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ ๐˜š๐˜ฆ๐˜ฆ, which narrates the story of Ram(z)i, a lonely working class man who died twice. Additionally, Ola Hassanain will present her spatial installation for the exhibition, ๐˜ž๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ ๐˜Š๐˜ฐ๐˜ญ๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ๐˜ค๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ ๐˜—๐˜ฐ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ต๐˜ด, and contextualise it within her ongoing project ๐˜›๐˜ฆ๐˜ญ๐˜ญ ๐˜›๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ž๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ ๐˜ž๐˜ฉ๐˜ข๐˜ต ๐˜›๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜Š๐˜ญ๐˜ข๐˜บ ๐˜’๐˜ฆ๐˜ฑ๐˜ต ๐˜š๐˜ฆ๐˜ค๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ต. The Ground Keeps What It Holds by Areej Ashhab ()

A patch of lime-plastered floor appears suspended between display and burial. In dialogue with a 1991 ritual at W139, where artists buried valued objects to โ€˜chargeโ€™ the ground before installing a new floor, this work engages ancient burial practices in Palestine and the aftermath of their settler-colonial excavation.
In W139โ€™s charged groundโ€”where objects remain buriedโ€”an โ€˜unfleshedโ€™ lime skin, once domestic and sacred, hovers over the rubble and abandoned trenches of ongoing settler-colonial digging. It asks: what might the ground unleash when it is denied keeping what it holds?

is an artist and researcher whose work addresses material heritage loss, more-than-human ecologies, and land politics. Areejโ€™s practice spans material experimentation, writing, and film, and often unfolds collectively through walks, workshops, and shared meals.

As part of the ๐˜ง๐˜ญ๐˜ฐ๐˜ถ๐˜ณ, ๐˜ธ๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ, ๐˜ด๐˜ฐ๐˜ช๐˜ญ public programme, Areej Ashhab will be screening her film ๐˜“๐˜ช๐˜ฎ๐˜ฆ ๐˜›๐˜ฉ๐˜ณ๐˜ฐ๐˜ถ๐˜จ๐˜ฉ ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜Œ๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ต๐˜ด on Wednesday 27 May in the context of ๐˜ข๐˜ง๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ ๐˜ข๐˜ง๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ญ๐˜ช๐˜ท๐˜ฆ๐˜ด: a film screening and talk programme which will also bring in the work of Ola Hassanain and Dina Mimi.

We begin with a question: must flour be cheap? From there, we let it unfold through stories, bodies, knowings, and speculationsโ€”these become the curriculum.

Above us, a constellation of collected flour bags. Beneath us, sacks holding the weight of hunger, of resistance, of distance traveled from field to mill to bakery to hand. Weโ€™ll lie with that weight, carry it, rearrange it, and feel what it does to the body, how pressure grounds us, how heaviness speaks through us.

Together weโ€™ll move through conversations about food systems, mills and grain, food autonomy, aid, and famine, and the quiet violence of a price that was never really just about the mere cost of flour.

The second installment of ๐˜ง๐˜ญ๐˜ฐ๐˜ถ๐˜ณ ๐˜ฎ๐˜ถ๐˜ด๐˜ต ๐˜ฃ๐˜ฆ... will be 28 June, more information about this very soon!

____

The contemporary visual arts and creative industries (BKCI) in Amsterdam are under severe pressure. Although BKCI institutions are highly regarded internationally and indispensable to the city, conditions are becoming increasingly difficult. Recent research commissioned by the Municipality of Amsterdam and MOKER reveals that there are significant financial problems and uncertainties behind the scenes.

In the Visual Arts and Creative Industries Emergency Plan, we call, on behalf of MOKER, for structural additional investment of โ‚ฌ4.4 million per year and policy adjustments by the Municipality of Amsterdam, the Amsterdam Arts Council and the Amsterdam Fund for the Arts. This is necessary to strengthen the sector, secure its position within the local arts ecosystem, and offer prospects for development and growth.

tandoor, tannour, tandir, tonirโ€”an ancient underground clay oven. Carrying different names, theย tonirย belongs to a family of ovens that are found across Central and South Asia and the MENA regions. The oven has always been a central gathering point. In Armenian cultural tradition it was seen as a symbol of the โ€˜sun in the groundโ€™โ€”existing as a sacred space in the home for baking bread, cooking, and performing rituals.ย

During this workshop we will build aย tonir-style clay oven together in the ground at Four Siblings, using clay, soil, and sand from their land. We will be guided by ceramist, builder, artisan, teacher, and researcher Tatiana M. Melo, who will teach us to understand soil and use it for different purposes as we learn by doing collectively. We will start with a theoretical explanation about soil, earthen plasters, and wood-fired ovens, followed by the collective building of the tonir-style clay oven. Alongside the larger oven, we will also build a small stove.

These kilns will be activated on June 13th, duringย kiln as kin: a day of gathering, firing, cooking, where we will prepare food, cook, and eat together as a way to share knowledge about food systems, forgotten recipes, and lost rituals. More info about both events, you can find on our website!
