We are honored to welcome artist-filmmaker Inas Halabi (🧿 Inas ايناس 🧿) next Friday, 30th of October. She will lead us through a listening session centered around field recordings collected from the sites of demolished Palestinian villages.

These villages have been turned into Israeli national parks and reserves and overgrown with foreign pine trees in an attempt to erase them, confiscate the land, and prevent the original inhabitants (now refugees) from returning.

The field recordings are part of her ongoing research and a film she is currently producing, which also explores the Indigenous plants that continue to grow in these locations, alongside collective rituals related to the harvest season and land, as a way of disrupting this ongoing erasure. Presenting aural landscapes from these locations, that hold together the drum-like song of cicadas and the drone of jet engines, the soundscapes at W139 invite us to consider: What might an image of ‘return’ sound like?

🔔Save the date!🔔 Join us on November 20th at 19:00 for the grand opening of 𝘏𝘦𝘢𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘙𝘰𝘰𝘮 initiated by Rustan Söderling (Rustis)

𝘏𝘦𝘢𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘙𝘰𝘰𝘮, initiated by Rustan Söderling, is a group exhibition exploring improvised forms of connection and attachment in a society where shared structures begin to unravel.

The group exhibition unfolds through the works of the invited artists Jame St. Findlay (.girlfriend), Michelle Chang Qin (), Rosa Klerkx (Rosa Klerkx), Bin Koh (Bin Koh), John Smith (), Rustan Söderling (Rustis), Dan Walwin (Dan Walwin), and Andoni Zamora (Andoni Zamora Txakartegi).

Through time-based works, provisional environments and DIY logistics, the exhibition follows makeshift systems to find coherence and connection amid uncertainty: idiosyncratic cataloging, personal rituals, accidental communities, coping mechanisms and other ways to brace uncertainty. The exhibition space will become a temporary holding structure, a waiting room where these different beliefs and behaviours of uneasy alignment briefly mingle.

𝘔𝘦𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘢𝘭 𝘔𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳 by Laura Fong Prosper and Tin Wilke (ɹǝdsoɹԀ ƃuoℲ ɐɹnɐ˥ & )

Our digital culture has a strong but invisible material condition. It is built upon millennia-old temporal layers that contain the writing of terrestrial life. These layers form the geological ground where our collective memory has been inscribed, from ancient forms of writing to contemporary data technologies.

𝘔𝘦𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘢𝘭 𝘔𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳 explores the enigmatic connections between earth materials and these entangled temporalities, bringing together a hybrid constellation of media—screenprints, potato starch-based bioplastics, ash-based 3D-printed sculptures, and recycled fibers on canvas—with footage from a historic 16mm film archive that was meant to document “progress” within state socialist contexts.

ɹǝdsoɹԀ ƃuoℲ ɐɹnɐ˥ (she/her) is a visual artist from Panama based in Berlin. She works across video, film, digital media, and textiles. Her practice explores memory, origin, colonial legacies, environmental destruction, and feminist perspectives, while examining the link between past and future. She repurposes found materials: old photos, film, textiles, and discarded electronics, combining them to generate new meanings.

(he/they) is an undisciplinary artist, filmmaker and organizer from East Berlin. Through collective actions and collaborations they explore the constructions of dissident practices and speculative counter-narratives as resistance to the current condition of apocalypse. Their work focuses on the politics of archiving, countersexuality and collective memories at the intersection of digital new media, organic material and found footage.

Sapodilla is DARKMATTER Collective’s signature electronic music event, presenting a listening session inside W139 with local and international artists. Since its launch in 2022, Sapodilla has reimagined club culture as a space where electronic sound, artistic experimentation and community converge, centering marginalized voices and diasporic perspectives.

Named after a fruit native to the tropical Americas, with deep roots in Indigenous histories of cultivation and knowledge, Sapodilla takes the fruit as a symbol of movement and cultural transformation. Its journeys across the Caribbean and beyond resonate with DARKMATTER’s engagement with histories shaped by indigeneity, colonialism, slavery, migration and creolization—and with the cultures and communities that have endured, transformed and flourished through them.

𝘗𝘭𝘶𝘮 𝘙𝘰𝘢𝘥 𝘛𝘦𝘢 𝘋𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘮_𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘏𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘰𝘶𝘵 is a relaxed performance centered around the autobiographical video game Plum Road Tea Dream created by artist Samuel Baidoo (Samuel Baidoo), (Plum Road Tea Dream). The work explores how we can imagine new spaces for grief, healing, commemoration and transformation. Equal parts honest conversation, collective gaming session, tea ceremony and ritual, it invites audiences into an intimate but casual space of reflection and shared experience. For this edition of _𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘏𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘰𝘶𝘵 at W139 Samuel will enter into a dialogue with 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘕𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘙𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 initiating artist Lawil Karama(Lawil Laboke Karama).

This Sunday at W139: 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘍𝘳𝘢𝘮𝘦 𝘊𝘢𝘯𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘏𝘰𝘭𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘎𝘩𝘰𝘴𝘵𝘴, a screening and reading programme with Komtouch Napattaloong (Komtouch Dew Napattaloong), Bart Seng Wen Long (Bart Seng Wen Long ), and Kaisa Saarinen (kaisa )!

Extending from the trio’s collective installation on view in 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘕𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘙𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨, the programme will bring focus to their distinct yet sympathetic forms of narration and storytelling. Featured will be three short films, an interview with a gimp, and excerpts from a hybrid nonfiction-in-progress.

Lingering within the hallowed space of the make-shift rubber tapper shelter in the main exhibition gallery, between the CRT monitor and the modern flatscreen and the stacks of anarchronistic agitprop, are persistent ghosts biding their time to re-manifest: as kinky anecdotes of a middle-aged Singaporean rubberist; a veteran camcorder on its last pixels; eccentric mythologies that have built and continue to sustain a nation’s spirit; the dreams sustained by freebleeding trees night after night.

The residency of Komtouch Napattaloong is part of the Exchanges programme by the Prince Claud Fund (Prince Claus Fund), with the support of the Amsterdam City Council.

Curious to know what ‘atmospheric witnessing’ is? We want to welcome you for 𝘈𝘵𝘮𝘰𝘴𝘱𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘤 𝘞𝘪𝘵𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨, a conversation between Lawil Karama (Lawil Laboke Karama), initiator of 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘕𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘙𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 and anthropologist, artist, and curator Edward Akintola Hubbard ().

This Saturday, September 19th, they will dive into Karama’s concept of ‘atmospheric witnessing’, its emergence from years of investigation into the archive of human rights violations during the Idi Amin regime in Uganda (1971-1979), and its relation to our new exhibition 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘕𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘙𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨.

Together we ask how to reimagine representations of violence and staged sites of memorial, and how computer scripts, such as the one used in ‘Algorithm of Colour’, can commemorate history instead of predicting the future.

In this first event of the context programme of 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘕𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘙𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨, the audience is invited into Karama’s ongoing process, offering a view of how the ideas behind 𝘈𝘵𝘮𝘰𝘴𝘱𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘤 𝘞𝘪𝘵𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨 as a computer script emerged from years of investigation into the archive of human rights violations during the Idi Amin regime in Uganda (1971-1979). They will shed light on Karama’s long-term research into the limits of representing violence, the possibilities for staging sites of memorial, and the notion of ‘atmospheric witnessing’.

With ‘atmospheric witnessing,’ Karama counters conventional notions of spectatorship connected to photographic documentation, looking, instead, to the sky itself as an actant present to Amin’s system of executions. The concept also, as Karama and Hubbard will explore, serves as a key starting point for the broader curatorial concept behind the exhibition 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘕𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘙𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨.
