🎥 🇯🇲 For generations, the 𝗧𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗮𝘀 𝗳𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝘆 has cared for 𝗕𝗼𝗯 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗹𝗲𝘆 𝗕𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 and ensured that it remained open to everyone. This is increasingly rare in Jamaica, where more and more beaches are being privatized.

The popular beach near Kingston now also faces the 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, putting its future as a public space for Jamaicans at risk. As 𝗖𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗮 𝗧𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗮𝘀 explains in front of the Kingston & St. Andrew Parish Court, “𝘄𝗲’𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗳𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁. 𝗪𝗲’𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴: 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗲.”

The upcoming documentary 𝗕𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗮 𝗕𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗴𝗲: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗝𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗰𝗮’𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 (2029, 29’), made by Kingston-based filmmaking duo 𝗘𝗺𝗶𝗲𝗹 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘀 and 𝗘𝗹𝘀𝗶𝗲 𝗩𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗲𝗿 in collaboration with 𝗝𝗮𝗕𝗕𝗘𝗠 and 𝗞𝗲𝘇𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗱𝗶, follows 𝗖𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗮 as she fights to preserve public access to 𝗕𝗼𝗯 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗹𝗲𝘆 𝗕𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵.

🎥 🇯🇲 Of all 𝗝𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗰𝗮’𝘀 𝟰𝟮𝟰 𝗯𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀, only 𝟳𝟮 (17%) are officially designated as 𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗯𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀 (NEPA 2025). The 𝗕𝗹𝘂𝗲 𝗟𝗮𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗻 in 𝗣𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 is one of them, but access to the lagoon has become increasingly 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗱.

Although the 𝗕𝗹𝘂𝗲 𝗟𝗮𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗻 is a 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 managed by the 𝗝𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗰𝗮 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 (JNHT), the surrounding land is 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝗦𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗹𝘀, while the 𝗼𝘄𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗻𝘁 𝘃𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗮𝘀 there frequently obstruct access via the parochial road and even from the sea. 🎥 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗸 𝘆𝗼𝘂 to everyone who joined us for the 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝗦𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 of 𝗙𝗮𝗻𝗼𝗻 yesterday evening in 𝗟𝗔𝗕𝟭𝟭𝟭. Another 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗱-𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴, we truly appreciate your presence and support!

A 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗸𝘀 goes to 𝗝𝗲𝗮𝗻-𝗖𝗹𝗮𝘂𝗱𝗲 𝗕𝗮𝗿𝗻𝘆, the director of 𝗙𝗮𝗻𝗼𝗻, as well as to 𝗠𝗲𝗿𝗼𝗻 𝗧𝗮𝘆𝗲, the director of 𝗕𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗚𝗶𝗿𝗹 𝗠𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗰, the short film we showed as well.
