In 2023, Fonds Kwadraat supported Jonat Deelstra with an interest-free loan for material costs during the early development of his "Death Vessel" project. Since then, the project has evolved into an ongoing investigation of how death, ecology and legal protection might intersect beneath the surface of the North Sea.

The sculptures on view imagine a future where burial grounds on the seabed become protected reefs in which marine life can flourish. The newest reef urns are presented as part of a group exhibition in which 22 contemporary artists reflect on the relationship between people and nature, inspired by the legacy of Hendrik Willem Mesdag and Sientje Mesdag-van Houten.

What started with a Fonds Kwadraat interest-free loan has grown into a long-term research project. In 2023, Studio presented a playful installation at , opening up a conversation about how public space can become more inclusive for people who encounter barriers.

Over the past three years, the project has evolved into a design-led investigation into how children with and without disabilities, as well as neurodivergent children, can better meet and play together in public space. In collaboration with and , studio explores the barriers children experience and how design can contribute to more inclusive play environments.

This autumn, the outcomes of the research will be presented through a new play installation at and at Dutch Design Week 2026. A handbook sharing the project’s insights and design principles will also be published.

ART NEWS: presents works from her “Hanami Blossom” series in “DUET – The Netherlands + Japan”, now on view at in Zundert.

The group exhibition pairs artists based in the Netherlands with Japanese artists and explores connections to Vincent van Gogh and his fascination with Japan.

For “Hanami Blossom”, Emily Bates photographed the cherry blossom (sakura), a motif that inspired van Gogh’s iconic “Almond Blossom” painting.

Emily Bates received a Fonds Kwadraat interest-free loan in 2023 to develop new prints. The exhibition runs until 4 October.

Rotterdam-based artist opened her solo exhibition “Nu het er nog is” .

What does it mean to return to a place that no longer exists in the same way? Anouk revisits the landscapes of her childhood through her father’s photo archive, retracing and re-photographing locations tied to personal history. She translates these shifts across time into monumental charcoal drawings that surround the viewer. Her exhibition brings together past and present as layered, fragile constructions, where memory becomes something physical, yet never fixed.

With the support of a Fonds Kwadraat interest-free loan, Anouk was able to realise this solo exhibition. Supporting artists in taking the next step in their practice, from research and production to presentation, is at the core of what we do.
