We are excited to share the first Harm Reduction Essentials mini report, focusing on the state of harm reduction in prisons.
Drug use does not stop at the prison gates, and neither should harm reduction. This is especially urgent as drug use in prisons is often higher than in the general population, while access to essential harm reduction services remains limited.
Prison settings are also marked by a high prevalence of hepatitis C and high-risk substance use often leading to overdose and even death. Providing harm reduction services on site is therefore essential to protect health, prevent avoidable deaths, and uphold the dignity and rights of people in prison.
