🧕Who Is That Muslim Woman? is an Action Project by Amsterdam 2024 Fellow Maryam Abdelalim.

Maryam Abdelalim observed how Islamophobia has been rising in the political atmosphere of the Netherlands and particularly how hijabi's were being unjustly censorsed and stereotyped. In response, she created a safe space for women to share their own stories.

✨Held at Pakhuis de Zwijger as part of the Diaspora Dialogues Series, this gathering brought together 3 panelists to engage in open conversation about life as a Muslim woman in a “progressive” country like the Netherlands. Together, they explored questions like: Which assumptions are made about this community? How do they navigate the balance between being Muslim and being Dutch? And where do these women draw their strength and resilience from?

🗣 “She [the Muslim woman] has been ridiculed, victimized and villainised and I felt that it was time for more spaces to hear from the horse’s mouth.”

What started as a spontaneous idea grew into a thoughtfully curated event rooted in community-centered learning, public dialogue, and lived experience. Now, Maryam is expanding into the newly found organisation Mien Il Helwa Di who is launching their first project with a series of focus groups in The Hague in September 2025.

Onze mentoren zijn changemakers die al langer bezig zijn met thema’s als racisme, inclusie en democratie. Zij delen hun ervaringen, denken mee én begeleiden jou stap voor stap bij je eigen Action Project – een maatschappelijk project dat je samen met anderen realiseert om verschil te maken in je eigen omgeving!

Rooted in Rituals: research lab is an Action Project by 2024 Fellow .

Naomi noticed how religion is often met with harmful stereotypes and asked: how do we build spaces for open, brave, interreligious dialogue?

📖What began as an introspective zine - letters to God, the Devil, her father, and the reader - grew into a collaborative research lab hosted at Buitenplaats Brienenoord. There, Naomi brought together 20 artists, makers, and thinkers to reflect on rituals: how they preserve memory, shift in diaspora, and shape who we are.

“One of the primary purposes of rituals is communication. Thus if you turn it around: a conversation itself can be an intentional ritual.”

⭐Naomi continues to explore interreligious thinking and ritual practice as dynamic forms of connection. In her upcoming projects she aims to treat religion not merely as dogma or tradition, but as a living, flexible understanding that extends into everyday life.

We can’t wait to follow Naomi on her journey of sparking impactful interreligious dialogue and connection!
