Angola is stepping decisively onto the global meetings stage.

Last month marked a defining moment for Africa's meetings industry. ICCA CEO Dr. Senthil Gopinath met with H.E. President João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço to formalise a landmark destination partnership, making Angola the first African nation to join ICCA as a Destination Partner.

This isn't symbolic. It's strategic.

The launch of the Angola Convention Bureau, held in the presence of President Lourenço and Minister of Tourism Márcio De Jesus Lopes Daniel, signals something significant: political will at the highest level, translated into concrete action. Governments that show up at ribbon cuttings are sending a message. Angola's message is clear, it intends to compete.

The infrastructure is following. The Luanda Convention Palace is on track for completion by end of 2026; the government framework is in place; and the institutional coordination has begun. These aren't promises, they're foundations.

For ICCA, the partnership goes beyond recognition. It's about building real capacity, education, industry insight, and global connectivity, so that Angola's ambition is matched by the skills and networks to deliver.

Africa's share of international association meetings has long been underweighted relative to its population, its growth, and its ideas. Angola is part of a broader shift that is changing that.

The world is looking to Africa. Angola is ready to meet it.

Legislative Action Day / Global Policy Forum

Last week, ICCA continued its global advocacy work in Washington, D.C. ICCA North America Regional Director Shawn Cheng participated in two important industry events: the Exhibitions & Conferences Alliance Legislative Action Day and the Global Policy Forum, hosted by ECA and UFI, bringing ICCA’s global perspective to some of the critical policy conversations impacting the future of international meetings.

On Capitol Hill, Shawn joined hundreds of industry peers in meetings with members of Congress to advocate for the issues that matter most to the global meetings and events industry. The business events industry contributes over $400 billion to the U.S. economy and supports 2.6 million jobs, and ICCA was there to make sure the global dimension of that story was heard.

As Shawn put it:
"Why attracting international attendees to business events and tradeshows is so critical for any city and country is because it establishes the platform effect, where buyers can access all products and exhibitors can interact with potential customers from all over the world. Being the place to be is more important and impactful than simple hotel beds and restaurant spend."

Multiple state delegations heard that message firsthand, a reminder that international meetings are not just a global story, but a local one, too.

The following day, at the Global Policy Forum, Shawn joined an invitation-only gathering of senior industry leaders to advance the advocacy conversation. As a panelist in a discussion about sustainability in the event industry, Shawn shared ICCA's perspective on progress, collaboration, and the industry's collective responsibility to lead, alongside peers from IMEX Group, Javits Center, IAEE, and others.

The forum highlighted a critical issue: the events and tradeshow model is inherently more sustainable than its alternatives, and the global business events industry needs to own and tell that story with confidence.

From the halls of Congress to the boardroom table, ICCA's commitment to shaping the future of international association meetings doesn't stop with our members. It extends to the health and growth of the entire industry, all around the world.

5 Ways to Crisis-Proof Your Events 🚨

The best crisis response starts long before a crisis happens. Building resilience into your event strategy helps protect your attendees, reputation, and operations when the unexpected occurs.

1. Identify risks early: Assess potential threats across safety, operations, technology, and reputation before they become issues.
2. Define clear decision structures: Establish who leads, approves, and communicates during a crisis to ensure swift action.
3. Build strong communication protocols: Prepare clear messaging for attendees, partners, suppliers, and media to maintain trust and consistency.
4. Test your response plans: Run simulations and exercises to identify gaps and strengthen coordination.
5. Learn and refine continuously: Review every event, capture lessons learned, and update your plans to stay prepared.

Crisis readiness is no longer optional, it's an essential part of successful event management. Did you know explores this in detail? The Risk & Crisis Management chapter provides practical frameworks, tools, and real-world scenarios to help you anticipate risks, respond effectively, and build long-term resilience.

A Convention Bureau, A New MICE Destination, A Strategic Partnership:

ICCA along with Gaining Edge showcases the creation of Convention Bureau in Uzbekistan.

At IMEX 2026, ICCA CEO Dr. Senthil Gopinath demonstrated exactly what strategic leadership in the global meetings industry looks like.

ICCA will further enhance the positioning of the Bureau In discussions with Uzbekistan's Committee for Tourism Chairman Abdulaziz Akkulov.

ICCA's world-class analytics to attract global associations to the destination. A powerful signal of what becomes possible when ICCA's knowledge and networks are put to work.

"Uzbekistan is emerging as one of the most exciting destinations in the international meetings landscape. Through this partnership, we are giving the country the tools, the data and the global connections it needs to compete at the highest level. Establishing a Convention Bureau is not just an administrative step, it is a declaration of intent, and ICCA is proud to be part of that journey." Dr. Senthil Gopinath, CEO, ICCA.

Arda Khiva in Khiva city was identified as a new international business meetings and events destination, a clear sign that Uzbekistan's meetings ambitions extend well beyond its capital.

Under Dr. Gopinath's direction, ICCA continues to serve as a catalyst that transforms destination ambition into tangible international opportunity, sitting at the table with decision-makers, shaping the infrastructure of tomorrow's meetings industry, and connecting destinations to the global association community in ways that create lasting impact.

ICCA would like to extend special thanks to Bruce Redor, Gaining Edge for strategizing the formation of the Bureau.

The future of business events is being written now, with ICCA as a key author.
