How does EATRIS support science policy? 🧬📝

EATRIS works closely with research funders, regulators and policy-makers to raise awareness of the benefits and challenges associated with Translational Medicine, both in terms of the research process and the innovation ecosystems that can support effective translation.

Since 2018, EATRIS has participated in 21 policy statements and consultations and 84 policy workshops attended, demonstrating sustained commitment to science policy.

🔦🇮🇹 Spotlight on Italy! Following the handover from the Czech Republic this week in Prague, Italy has now officially stepped into the EATRIS Spotlight Programme with the topic "Inclusion and Equity in Medicine and Biomedical Research".

Throughout the spotlight programme, opportunities, challenges and ethical implications related to inclusion and equity in research and clinical practice will be explored, with the goal of advancing more effective and accessible scientific and clinical practices for all.

Academic researchers play an important role in advancing medicines and improving health systems through research. To support academic and not-for-profit medicine developers in bringing treatments to patients, EATRIS and the European Medicines Agency (EMA) have developed a new video tutorial on the EMA Scientific Advice process.

Whether you're early in development or preparing your next step, this tutorial walks you through:
🔹 When and why to seek Scientific Advice
🔹How to prepare strong briefing documents and questions
🔹How to submit requests via the IRIS portal
🔹What to expect during the Scientific Advice process

The tutorial was jointly developed by EATRIS and EMA, with contributions from more than 37 experts, including EMA and EATRIS staff, members of the Scientific Advice Working Party, and academic medicine developers.
It is freely accessible to researchers and the wider public.

Nominations are now open for two prestigious awards recognising excellence in cancer research:

🏆 The Pezcoller-Marina Larcher Fogazzaro-EACR Women in Cancer Research Award

Each award includes €10k and offers an opportunity to celebrate researchers making important contributions to cancer research and translational research. Researchers at all career stages are encouraged to nominate an eligible colleague or collaborator.

The Pezcoller Foundation is a non-profit organization created in 1980 by Prof. Alessio Pezcoller (1896 - 1993) Chief Surgeon at the Santa Chiara Hospital of Trento, Italy. The goal of the Foundation is to promote biomedical research in the field of cancer.

🧬 The Cell and Gene Therapy (ATMP) Development Course organised by Erdera and EATRIS has kicked off in Utrecht, the Netherlands.

Over the next 5 days, participants will explore how ATMPs can be successfully translated from the laboratory to the clinic. There are dedicated sessions on scientific principles, Manufacturing/CMC, Regulatory pathways, Reimbursement and Patient access.

🇨🇿 EATRIS Czech Republic wrapped up their time in the EATRIS Spotlight Programme this week with a concluding event hosted at the Kaiserstein Palace in Prague.

With the topic “Precision and Personalised Health – from Discovery to Patient", the Czech Spotlight Programme highlighted the country’s contribution to building a future where healthcare is more precise, predictive, and patient-centred.

The concluding event offered a platform for knowledge exchange, collaboration, and discussion among the Czech translational research ecosystem and the wider EATRIS community.

Registrations are now open for the PRECISEU PM School on 5–9 June in Sofia, Bulgaria and online.

The programme offers five days of training and knowledge exchange on personalised medicine, covering topics such as health data, AI, ATMPs, funding, technology transfer and innovation pathways.
