Wat betekent het om werkelijk gezien te worden?

Deborah Levy’s nieuwste boek “My Year in Paris with Gertrude Stein” (De Geus, 2026) duikt in het leven en werk van de legendarische schrijver en kunstverzamelaar Gertrude Stein. Via Stein stelt Levy uiteindelijk een vraag die zowel persoonlijk als universeel is: wat betekent het om écht begrepen te worden?

Precies die spanning tussen het individu en hoe we verlangen gezien te worden staat centraal in “De Vorm Van Ons,” het thema van Brainwash Festival dit jaar.

What does it mean to be truly seen?

Deborah Levy’s latest book “My Year in Paris with Gertrude Stein” (De Geus, 2026) explores the life and work of legendary writer and art collector Gertrude Stein. Through Stein, Levy ultimately asks a question that is both personal and universal: what does it mean to be truly understood?

That same tension, between the individual and how we long to be seen, sits at the heart of “The Shape of Us,” this year’s Brainwash Festival theme.

Tijdens Brainwash Next en Bij Nader Inzien schijnen zes opkomende filosofen een nieuw licht op hedendaagse uitdagingen.

Van rouw om een verdwijnende wereld en camouflerende octopussen tot energie-utopieën en de blik van de ander. Stephan Huijboom, Veerle van Wijngaarden, Niki Hadikoesoemo, Hasan Erkan, Nynke van Uffelen en Lotje Siffels nemen je mee in het gesprek.

Hoe gebruiken we creativiteit om realistische toekomstvisies vorm te geven?

Dit jaar geven we voor het eerst een podium aan nieuw denktalent, onder de naam Brainwash Next. Jonge filosofen, schrijvers en makers vertalen hun ideeën naar publieke gesprekken.

Wie geeft de boom een stem?🍃

Wij noemen bomen knuffelbaar. Kwetsbaar. Bijna als familie. Maar zien we de boom dan nog wel voor wat hij is? Of vullen we onze eigen leegte met zorg voor een niet menselijk organisme?

Vier journalisten van De Groene Amsterdammer zoeken het uit. Sanne Bloemink onderzoekt onze liefde voor bomen, en wie die eigenlijk dient. Sander Turnhout pleit voor een rechtspositie voor de natuur, een stem voor de boom. Frank Mulder bekijkt het verborgen leven van bomen door een filosofische bril. En Jaap Tielbeke zoekt uit wat zorgen voor de boom kan betekenen in onze ecologische ellende.

En dan is er nog Stephan Sanders, die je meeneemt in een live aflevering van podcast Denkspoor: welke denkers drukten hun stempel op onze geschiedenis zonder ooit een standbeeld te krijgen?

Who gives the tree a voice?🍃

We call trees huggable. Vulnerable. Almost like family. But do we still see the tree for what it is? Or are we filling our own emptiness by caring for a non-human organism?

Four journalists from De Groene Amsterdammer set out to find out. Sanne Bloemink examines our love for trees, and who that love actually serves. Sander Turnhout makes the case for legal standing for nature, a voice for the tree. Frank Mulder looks at the hidden life of trees through a philosophical lens. And Jaap Tielbeke explores what caring for the tree could mean amid our ecological turmoil.

And then there’s Stephan Sanders, who takes you into a live episode of podcast Denkspoor: which thinkers left their mark on our history without ever getting a statue?

Wat betekent het om écht begrepen te worden?

Tijdens de openingsavond van Brainwash Festival ontmoeten we Deborah Levy: schrijver, denker, observator van het menselijk tekort. Iemand die boeken schrijft die het gevoel geven dat er stiekem is meegekeken in je hoofd — en er vervolgens betere woorden voor heeft gevonden.

Op 29 oktober in Skatecafé Amsterdam gaan we met Levy op zoek naar the shape of us. Naar het spanningsveld tussen individu en collectief. Tussen vrijheid en verbondenheid. Tussen voor jezelf kiezen en er voor anderen zijn.

De laatste fotodump van Brainwash Breakfast Club op Down The Rabbit Hole. Gisteren sloten we af met een gesprek over de drive om te presteren en de vraag wanneer je eigenlijk goed genoeg bent, samen met en Brankele Frank.

Dank aan iedereen die de afgelopen dagen aanschoof, meedacht en de gesprekken zo bijzonder maakte. En natuurlijk dank aan Down The Rabbit Hole Down The Rabbit Hole voor de gastvrijheid.
