✊🏽Building a just, democratic and sustainable world.

The Transnational Institute (TNI) is an international research and advocacy institute committed to building a just, democratic and sustainable world. For nearly 50 years, TNI has served as a unique nexus between social movements, engaged scholars and policy makers. TNI has a reputation for well researched analysis on key global issues long before they become mainstream concerns. As a non-sectarian

institute made up of researchers, scholar-activists and movement-builders, TNI uniquely combines a ‘big picture’ analysis with proposals and solutions that are both just and pragmatic. Our capacity to build long-term respectful mutual relationships with strategic social movements is helping put radical ideas into movement.

Fractures is an eight-week teach-in series (30 April – 18 June) created to go beyond the headlines and uncover the deeper forces shaping this moment.

Join leading thinkers and activists from across the globe as they examine the major challenges of our time—from the collapse of the international order to the rise of fascism and climate breakdown—and share bold, practical strategies for resistance, justice, and collective liberation.

Speakers include 🗣 Jayati Ghosh, Aziz Rana, Quinn Slobodian, Tasneem Essop, Aslı Ü. Bâli, Jomo Kwame Sundaram, Achin Vanaik, Shanelle Matthews, Kali Akuno and Tooba Syed.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) claims to respect the rights of migrants. But our new research shows links between the IOM and serious human rights violations perpetrated against migrants in the Balkans, where its presence is overwhelmingly funded by the EU.

During the 2011 Arab Spring and the Occupy movement, social media was seen as a technology of liberation. Yet ten years on, social media is more associated with surveillance, repression and misinformation. What should progressive forces do?

In recent years, the Right has been more successful at using digital tools than progressive movements. What are the strategies and tactics, progressive movements can use to build digital counter-power?

In 2017, the governor of Salta, Argentina, announced the launching of a Microsoft-designed AI platform to ‘prevent’ teenage pregnancy in the region – but who does such a project actually serve? Certainly not the teenage girls in question.

In 2017, the governor of Salta, Argentina, signed a project with Microsoft to use AI to prevent teenage pregnancies. The project's failure and its violations of privacy and human rights points to the dangers of relying on AI to tackle social and environmental issues.

By seizing the means of imaginative production, we can transform creativity into a tool for collective liberation that disrupts and overturns the very regimes of digital power that enclose and exploit it.

Corporations’ wealth is increasingly built on intangible intellectual property (IP) rights rather than hard assets. What if we could hack these legal and economic codes that underpin capitalism so that they are based on human rights, worker solidarity, ecological sustainability and community wealt...

Military and intelligence agencies use our data not only for spying, but also to reconstruct social networks and even to target individuals for lethal attacks.

In the US, Big Tech and the Military are increasingly fused, brought together by finance, joint projects, research and infrastructure. Untying the knot will be key to prevent endless wars abroad and militarised policing at home.

If we want to use our digital data for our collective benefit then we need to find ways to govern it collectively and democratically, rather than leave it in the hands of powerful corporations to do with as they will.

Big Tech’s power is not just due to their size, but because they collect, control and monetise the very information we need for markets to function. They have become markets unto themselves. Reining them will require thinking that goes beyond regulation.

"A small number of extremely powerful firms, namely Google, Amazon, Facebook, Apple, Microsoft, have what the European regulators call gatekeeper power – the right to decide who can speak, who can reach one another, how it works."
