Imagine a sari-sari store where every purchase you make helps build your own community’s resources. 🌾

That is how CSLA Rice Banks and Foodbanks work. Rather than money leaving the community to buy daily essentials elsewhere, members pool resources to buy and sell goods through a community-owned store.

Here’s how it works:
1. Members earn one point for every ₱100 they spend.
2. At the end of each cycle, the store’s profits are shared among members according to their points.
3. Twenty percent of monthly earnings is set aside for a community emergency fund.

More than a business, these foodbanks are a shared system of care—strengthening food security, providing support in difficult times, and building collective resilience.

For Sheryl Mendez, hardship meant having no savings to rely on and limited decision-making at home.

Through Solidarity of Oppressed Filipino People, Inc.’s organising and ANAK Foodbank’s Community Savings and Loans Association (CSLA), Sheryl found a space to save, learn, volunteer, and take on responsibilities. Her family—including her husband and seven-year-old child—gradually began saving together.

With CPF’s long-term support through the SiSTER Programme, SOFP is strengthening this work through community-identified training, technical guidance, and tools such as the CSLA and POWER manuals.

Today, Sheryl serves as SOFP’s Vice-Chairperson and Quezon City Cluster Representative—showing how community savings can build security, strengthen women’s voices at home, and open pathways to leadership.

Community-led development includes enabling community members to be co-researchers not just respondents.

On 17 April 2026, Connective Paths Foundation facilitated a Basic Data Analytics and Computation Workshop with six People’s Organisations from South Caloocan, Navotas, and Manila, under the SiSTER Programme in partnership with Solidarity of Oppressed Filipino People, Inc.

The session strengthened participants’ skills in data management and computation for their Community Savings and Loans Associations and rice/food banks—community-led initiatives that help families build security, respond to daily needs, and work towards a more resilient future.

Data is power.

When grassroots organisations are able to gather and use data correctly , they can design more effective programs for their communities.

On 15 April 2026, Connective Paths Foundation facilitated a Basic Data Analytics and Computation Workshop with 13 People’s Organisations in Norzagaray, Bulacan, under the SiSTER Programme in partnership with Solidarity of Oppressed Filipino People, Inc.

The workshop supported POs in strengthening the Community Savings and Loans Associations and rice/food banks that help families meet everyday needs. Beyond numbers, these skills help communities manage their resources, plan collectively, and build greater economic resilience.

WOMEN'S RIGHTS ARE HUMAN RIGHTS ✊💜

For 17 years, the Magna Carta of Women (RA 9710) has affirmed a fundamental promise: every Filipina has the right to live free from discrimination and violence, access opportunities and resources, and participate equally in decisions that shape her life and community.

But rights on paper must become rights experienced in everyday life.

At Connective Paths Foundation, we work alongside feminist grassroots organizations to help turn these commitments into action—strengthening women’s leadership, economic opportunities, and collective power, particularly in communities too often left behind.

17 years on, the work continues: from laws to lived realities, from rights to real change. 💜

Meet the grassroots movement transforming communities across the Philippines. 🇵🇭

Change doesn't always start in government offices or boardrooms. Sometimes, it starts with neighbours organising. ✨

Founded in 1995, the Solidarity of Oppressed Filipino People, Inc. (SOFP)—formerly known as DAMPA—is a thriving federation of over 75 grassroots organisations fighting for affordable housing, climate justice, and gender equality.

Beyond advocacy, SOFP drives economic resilience through self-managed Community Savings and Loans Associations (CSLAs), allowing underserved members to pool savings and access vital credit without formal banks.

Since 2022, Connective Paths Foundation has partnered with SOFP on the SiSTER Programme. By centering our joint efforts on women in urban and rural poor communities, we aren’t just funding programs, but are investing in the very heart of community resilience.

When opportunity is scarce, hope often begins with community. ❤️

For many Filipino families, financial hardship is about more than income. It affects security, wellbeing, and the choices parents can make for their children.

When her husband was unemployed for more than two years, Amythist Ortego, a mother of five from San Jose del Monte, Bulacan, faced an uncertain future.

Everything began to change when she joined SOFP's Community Savings and Loan Association through the SiSTER Programme, supported by Connective Paths Foundation (CPF). What started as a safe place to save became a source of confidence, solidarity, and opportunity—not only for Amythist, but for other women in her community.

Today, she is helping build stronger, more resilient communities by supporting other women to save, grow, and move forward together.

What if a community could become its own bank?

For millions of people, saving money, accessing affordable credit, or dealing with an unexpected emergency isn't as simple as walking into a bank. Many are excluded from formal financial services altogether.

That's where Community Savings and Loan Associations (CSLAs) come in.

CSLAs are community-owned, self-managed groups where members save small amounts together, access affordable loans from their collective savings, and share the profits earned from interest at the end of each cycle. More than a financial service, they strengthen trust, solidarity, and collective resilience.

At Connective Paths Foundation (CPF), we don't introduce this model—we support local organisations that already lead it.

Together with our grassroots partner, Solidarity of Oppressed Filipino People, Inc. (SOFP), we've spent the past four years helping communities expand a proven approach that puts local people in control of their own development.

In 2025 alone, SOFP established 46 new CSLAs, bringing the network to more than 75 groups reaching over 2,000 people, including women facing financial vulnerability.

Because lasting change happens when communities have the resources, knowledge, and power to lead their own solutions.
