Black Speaks Back

Black Speaks Back Belgo-Dutch platform for Black narratives.

A gathering around film, food, and music to honor the joy of community.

For this first edition, the celebration centers on the rich culture of Jamaica’s reggae scene, featuring Steve McQueen’s Lovers Rock, Ital cuisine and, of course, the irresistible pull of sweet, sweet reggae music.

Are you ready for our Black Study Gathering?
✨ Meet the facilitators who’ll be guiding you through the weekend of 10 and 11 May.

This Black Study workshop was first initiated by Lukas Ziel (they/them), and comes to life in collaboration with Black Speaks Back, a grassroots media collective dedicated to amplifying Black narratives in experimental ways.

We’re gathering at Metro54, joined by Saffa Khalil (she/her) and Oda-Kange Midvåge Diallo (she/her).

About the facilitators:

* Lukas Ziel (.tired.arsonist_) as an independent scholar, writer, and poet with roots in sociology and aesthetic philosophy. Their work explores Blackness through a sociopoetic of performance and fugitivity, engaging with abject socialities.

* Saffa Khalil () is an archivist and interdisciplinary researcher. Her practice weaves together Black radical traditions and sonic practices to build alternative archives that hold, sustain, and honor Black knowledge production.

* Oda-Kange Midvåge Diallo, PhD () is a researcher and facilitator of Black Study — a non-disciplinary, collective, and embodied approach to knowledge-making within Black diaspora communities in Europe. As a Fulani-Norwegian-Dane, she navigates and critiques the material legacies of Nordic colonialisms and the nation-state.

What does it mean to refuse? Not as withdrawal or silence, but as a deliberate act. Refusal as a method. As practice. As a way of thinking and living that pushes against systems of control.

This workshop is an invitation to study together, to join in Black Study. To sit with theory that emerges from Black Life, Black Death, and Black Struggle. We’ll spend two days reading, listening, discussing, and making sense of Refusal as a political and personal practice.

Rooted in the Black Radical Tradition, we’ll explore how Black Study helps us understand the world and act within it. We’ll read and think with writers like Audre Lorde, Fred Moten, and Tina Campt. The aim is not just to understand the texts, but to ask what they do, and what they ask of us.

📅 10 and 11 May 2025 from 10:00 until 16:00
💰 Free registration, limited place!
