Placemaking Europe

Placemaking Europe This is the official page of Placemaking Europe. https://placemaking-europe.eu/

We are the network for placemaking in Europe and our aim is to spread and accelerate placemaking for global impact. We are the network for placemaking in Europe, connecting practitioners, academics, community leaders, market actors and policymakers throughout Europe in the field of placemaking, public space, social life, human scale and the city at eye level. The aim is to disseminate placemaking

practices with the goal of creating healthy, inclusive and sustainable spaces and communities. We develop and share knowledge; develop, test and use tools; exchange ideas; and actively shape projects together. We support and collaborate with organisations that want to work on placemaking, social life, human scale, and a better eye-level experience.

Our final day in Wrocław saw the team wrap up the last stretch of venue scouting in the City Centre for Placemaking Week Europe 2026 festival this September.

Wrocław truly surprised me as a first-time visitor. The amount of cultural life happening in every corner of the city embodies the essence of placemaking, with spaces shaped with people, for people.

At Mediateka, we found a place that goes beyond a traditional library. It is a space for games, ideas, community gatherings, and experimental formats like the “Living Library” events where you can borrow time with a person to speak with them.

A highlight for me was the Passage of Dialogue, located in a historic underpassage of the city centre which was famous for musicians, street artists and iconic sandwiches. It’s now a centre supporting migrants and refugees and is a living example of how inclusive spaces foster belonging, help bridge cultures, and foreground resilience through community support.

Cinema New Horizons showed me how film can become a catalyst for connection, reflection, and shared experience. Here, culture sits at the centre of community life, sparking dialogue and inspiring new ways of seeing the city and each other.

I’m beyond excited for this year’s festival! Thanks for staying tuned! Don’t forget Early Bird tickets are still available (link in bio) and our Open Call applications are due April 19th!

It’s impossible to capture such a packed, inspiring day in one reel… but here’s a glimpse….

We kicked off at City Hall with Vice President Jakub Mazur and other city departments, exchanging ideas for the festival and setting the tone for what’s to come.

Next stop, the historic Market Hall. Opened in the early 20th century, it has served generations of residents and traders, and is now at a turning point. With new management soon to be selected through a competition, there’s an exciting (and challenging) opportunity to rethink its future — balancing tradition with innovative approaches to revitalisation.

We then visited a grassroots Spanish bookshop by owner Ewa Malec, a small but powerful cultural hub. After a recent relocation, it’s been an emotional journey, so if you’re in Wrocław, please go show some support 🤝

On to Plac Kościuszki, an iconic square with strong artistic roots. Over the years, it has attracted small galleries, design studios, and cultural initiatives, giving it a distinct artistic character. A cafe owner and local gallery stakeholders shared with us some important insights, opportunities and challenges on the square.

Quick lunch at Barbara, a long-standing cultural meeting point in the city.

A big milestone, we officially signed the contract with Wrocław for the festival ✍️

We ended at Triangle Square and its neighbourhood Activity Centre, a vibrant NGO-led space supporting youth, culture, and community. Highlights included a room designed and built by local teenagers, a true example of ownership through co-creation.

The triangle square faces challenges with traffic and car dominance. Reimagining it could unlock its role as a real outdoor neighbourhood hub.

Local challenges are a way for our community of practitioners to come to the festival and leave a legacy. Do you have bright ideas that can help shape the city? This is your chance to make an impact!

More to come soon… 👀 Stay tuned for day 2!

Each Placemaking Week Europe revolves around four themes, rooted in placemaking approaches and shaped by the host city’s distinct goals and character.

For this year’s edition in Wrocław, let’s dive deeper into the themes! 🌟

- Building Belonging
- It Takes a Village to Shape a City
- Sandbox City: the Courage to Experiment
- Rooted in Resilience

The Open Call for PWE26 is officially open! Every edition, our programme is built around these themes — and what makes it special is that we build it together with you. The sessions, activations, and ideas that shape PWE come from our community. If these themes resonate with you, join us in building something meaningful. Showcase your work, share your ideas, and connect with a community of practitioners and thinkers from across Europe and beyond!

Help us keep the spirit of 2025 alive through 2026.

Last year we expanded our programmes, connected more practitioners than ever, and gathered in Reggio Emilia for an unforgettable Placemaking Week Europe 2025. But building a strong, fair, and resilient placemaking network without sponsors isn’t easy.

We choose independence because it allows us to stay true to our values — and keep doing this work without selling out. That’s where you come in.

If you believe in this community and want to see it keep growing, please consider purchasing a Friends & Allies ticket. It comes with some rewards:

✨ A discounted ticket to Placemaking Week Europe 2026
🍽️ A special seat at our community dinner (dancing included 💃)
🏨 Discounted accommodation

Don’t sleep on it! Only 40 tickets remain.

Marta Popiołek from our core team recently visited Trenčín to take part in the opening week celebrating Trenčín as the European Capital of Culture for 2026!

In her reflections, she highlights how culture is spilling out of traditional venues into streets and squares, how local communities are actively shaping the programme, and how public spaces are transforming into stages for connection, creativity, and shared experiences. There was an exciting energy and enthusiasm of residents coming together to co‑create moments that make the city feel alive!

A bench is never just a bench.

It’s where the elderly man catches his breath on the way to the bakery. Where two strangers end up talking for an hour. Where kids turn every surface into a climbing adventure — because that’s what kids do.

A bench is an invitation. To slow down. To stay. To belong.

We often underestimate how much a simple seat can activate a neighborhood. But look closely and you’ll see:
A bench is a meeting point. A rest stop. A stage. A landmark. A little island of life in the middle of the city.
And yet — so many neighborhoods don’t have enough of them. Or the ones that exist are designed to keep people moving rather than to make them stay.

What if we thought of benches not as street furniture, but as catalysts? Small interventions with outsized social impact.

Where people can sit, people will gather. Where people gather, neighborhoods come alive. 🪑🌳

And if we’re serious about turning streets into social places — benches are the real superheroes. The simplest, most democratic tool we have to make a street feel like it belongs to people, not cars.

👇 Question for you: „Where’s your favorite bench in your city — and what makes it special?“

Dear friends,

This year has been powerful for Placemaking Europe. We grew, connected more practitioners than ever, and hosted a beautiful Placemaking Week Europe in Reggio Emilia.

Now we are asking for your support.

We are raising 20,000 euros to build a small but essential financial cushion and continue our independent, community-led work.

If Placemaking Europe has ever given you something, a connection, an idea, a moment you still carry, consider becoming one of our 50 Friends and Allies.

You can find out more about Friends and Allies and how to support us via the link in our bio.

Thank you for being part of this movement.

Always yours,
Placemaking Europe

How do you study a city while truly living in it? Following her instagram takeover, Urban Life & Placemaking (Breda University of AS) student Jill Roos explores this in her guest blog for Placemaking Europe. From everyday urban rhythms to the stories behind public spaces, she reflects on what it’s like to experience Kraków as a placemaking student!
