Aflatoun International

Aflatoun International Provides educational material for children and young people to learn social and financial skills that Kojo's business has quadrupled since.
(1)

Empowering tomorrow's entreptreneurs with social and financial skills for a fairer future. Aflatoun International offers social and financial education to millions of children and young people worldwide, empowering them to make positive change for a sustainable world. It turns dependence into independence by providing the next generation with the tools to run their own social and financial enterpr

ises, like our very own success story Kojo's Bikes. Our young entrepreneur decided to turn his life around with one simple idea: renting out his bike and saving the money for his education. He now has four bikes and plans on having bike shops all across Africa one day. There are many Kojo's out there so in order to equip them all with the 21st century skills, we create high-quality curricula, for different age groups. These are implemented by local partners and can be contextualised to local needs and specific circumstances, like youth employment, girls' empowerment and peacebuilding. Our educational material proves to be effective: it is one of the most well-researched life skills and financial education programmes globally and has been increasingly recognised as successful and innovative by The Brookings Institution and Harvard Graduate School of Education alike. What are your dreams?

Today, on the Global Day of Parents, we celebrate the parents, caregivers, and teachers who support children every day.

We spend so much time encouraging children to dream, learn, and grow that we sometimes forget to ask ourselves that very question.

Children learn not only from what we teach them, but also from what we model. When they see us pursuing goals, overcoming challenges, and continuing to learn, they understand that growth doesn't stop with age.

This Global Day of Parents, take a moment to reflect. Try our activity and ask yourself: what is a dream you have carried with you, and what small steps could turn it into a goal?

Because your dreams matter too.

How can cooperative finance better serve the next generation?

This was at the heart of Aflatoun International’s contribution during day one of the International Symposium on Cooperative Financial Institutions at the United Nations Headquarters in .

Convened by the International Cooperative Banking Association and the International Cooperative Alliance, the symposium brought together leaders to discuss how cooperative banks, credit unions, and community-based finance systems can support inclusive and equitable growth.

Our CEO Roeland Monasch joined the roundtable on policies that advance investment for a stronger future, bringing in a children and young people’s perspective from our global experience in Social and Financial Education.

One message was clear: inclusive finance cannot only be about institutions, products, and regulation. It must also be about the next generation.

Young people are already making financial decisions. They save, spend, use mobile money, watch families manage debt, and face growing digital financial risks. To build trusted and resilient financial systems, we must invest early in their financial capability, agency, and confidence.

Cooperatives are well placed to do this. They are rooted in communities, built on trust, and connected to people’s daily lives. They can help young people move from learning about saving to actually saving, from learning about enterprise to testing ideas, and from seeing cooperatives as something for older generations to seeing themselves as future members and leaders.

We were pleased to see strong voices for Social and Financial Education, including Jeroo Billimoria, Sylvia Paraguya from the National Confederation of Cooperatives (NATCCO Network), and Harsh Sanghani, President of the International Cooperative Alliance Youth Committee.

Thank you to the organisers and fellow participants for an important conversation on inclusive finance, youth empowerment, and the future of cooperative financial institutions.

🏆 Three recognitions, but one mission.

What does it look like when financial education reaches domestic workers in Asia, adolescents in fragile settings, and families navigating hardship?

It looks like this.

We are proud to share that Aflatoun International has been recognised at the The Money Awareness and Inclusion Awards Awards (MAIAs) 2026, in not one, not two, but three categories:

Thank you Sun Life for your trust and support, which made it possible!

🤝 A huge thank you to our partners Ibtikar, Mobaderoon, and Sustainable Development Fund (SDF). Your dedication in some of the world’s most fragile settings is truly inspiring.

And to our donor The Arab Gulf Programme for Development (AGFUND), your belief in this work made all the difference.

🌟 Special Commendation - Best Non-profit Project for Underserved Communities For Financial Education of Parents and Caregivers, helping families build long-term financial resilience.

🤝 A huge thank you to our partners Pratham Education Foundation, Bal Raksha Bharat, and United Way Mumbai for helping bring this work closer to families and communities.

And to The Human Safety Net, your generosity opened doors for families who needed it most!

None of this happened by accident. It happened because the right people came together: partners who believed in the mission, donors who backed it, and teams on the ground who made it real.

Did you know creativity helps children explore big ideas?

Through AflaTot, children learn by doing. They express ideas through stories, art, and imagination, explore emotions and choices, and start thinking independently from an early age.

Step by step, they begin to make sense of the world around them, not just by listening, but by playing, creating, and deciding together. Because creative learning is not just about what children know. It is about who they are becoming.

Pleased to highlight the Students’ Experience Exchange Programme with Students Lab Italy.

The exchange created a space for young people to connect, learn from one another, and share their experiences around social and financial education, life skills, and practical learning.

Through open dialogue and peer learning, students explored how these skills can support their confidence, decision-making, and active participation in their communities.

We are grateful to Students Lab Italy for supporting this meaningful exchange and helping young people learn, share, and grow together.
