Coral Reef Care

Coral Reef Care Foundation, marine conservation More than 25% of all marine species live in and around coral reefs. the so-called ‘spill-over effect’.

More than 700 million people depend on coral reefs for food and income. Coral reefs are the rainforests of our oceans, their protection is essential. Man's consumptive wishes, fishery methods, water acidization, global warming and pollution have an impact on the world's oceans and its inhibitants that is beyond imagination. Coral Reef Care protects the most fragile marine ecosystems - coral reefs.

Coral reefs cover less than 1% of world’s oceans, yet they are still mostly unprotected. Coral restoration, building artificial reefs, awareness campaigns with a bottom-up and community-based approach are a few of our activities. But most importantly, through community awareness we strive for more marine protected areas. Fishermen of poor communities often understand the ocean better than the large industrial fisheries. They understand that if nothing is done, there won’t be any fish left for them and their children. They understand that by protecting important areas, this can improve marine life in adjacent areas i.e. We aim for that community involvement and believe it’s the best way to have a durable and sustainable conservation plan. Coral Reef Care is active in East Africa and Indonesia.

Rays, sharks, guitarfish, skates, they are all 'elasmobranchs'. These species are heavily overfished around the world. In Kenya and Indonesia we work together with local fishermen to protect elasmobranchs. Thru awareness campaigns we explain their various crucial roles in the ecosystem, the law on protected species, ways to prevent bycatch, etc. Together we try to find alternative livelihoods for the fishers in for instance shark- or mangrove-ecotourism and in permaculture.

Follow us to keep updated on our stories and the stories of the fishers!

They’ve been shaping our oceans for over 150 million years, yet today, rays are under threat.

Often misunderstood and overlooked, these animals are essential for healthy coral reefs and thriving marine life. But overfishing and bycatch are putting their survival at risk.

That’s why in Kenya and Indonesia, we work with local partners to raise awareness among coastal communities and support fishermen in adopting more sustainable practices and finding alternative livelihoods.

Follow our journey and share it to raise awareness!

Did you know that blacktip reef sharks are common in tropical coastal waters? This one was spotted off the Kenyan coast, in Watamu.
Sharks are often portrayed as some of the ocean’s most dangerous creatures, but that’s rarely the case, especially for blacktips. They’re generally shy and will often swim away when
approached, just like you can see in this video.
Unfortunately, in many regions they’re still heavily fished, which can disrupt the food chain and harm marine ecosystems.
Share this to help spread awareness!

Let’s be part of the movement to protect our ocean biodiversity🦈

From restoring coral reefs to protecting sharks and rays, our work in Kenya connects ecosystems and communities!
In Watamu with A Rocha Kenya , we reattach coral fragments and transplant resilient corals to boost reef health and biodiversity. Some of these corals come from Kuruwitu via our parter Oceans Alive Kenya , where we helped start a restoration project over six years ago, and which is still thriving today.
Along the coast, we work with fishers to reduce bycatch and protect critical habitats for sharks and rays.
Because protecting the ocean means working both below and above the surface.
