📢 Call to Action for the rare cancer & rare disease community

We invite all ERN members to endorse and sign the Declaration on a European Innovation and Care Ecosystem for Rare and Complex Diseases, launched during the High Level Meeting for Rare and Complex Diseases (HLM Rare) in December 2025.

This joint political and strategic commitment — developed with patients, healthcare professionals, ERNs, academia and industry — sets out 8 Priority Actions to accelerate progress, improve access to diagnosis and treatment, strengthen clinical research and infrastructure, and secure sustainable funding for ERNs in the 2028–2034 EU framework.

By signing, you help:
• Drive a comprehensive EU Action Plan on Rare Diseases
• Strengthen recognition and long-term sustainability of ERNs
• Amplify our collective voice in EU policy and funding priorities

Over 50 organisations have already joined — now it’s our turn to make an impact.

The European Commission has published the first-ever Continuous Monitoring Report for the ERNs, confirming a 160% increase in new patients referred to ERN centres between 2018 and 2024 — clear evidence of how this EU infrastructure strengthens Europe’s health capacity and resilience. The report presents detailed indicators across seven core areas, including clinical activity, guidelines, registries, training and cross-border collaboration, reflecting the 2023 & 2024 monitoring cycles.

ERNs connect 1,600+ specialised units in 375 hospitals, creating a single pool of rare disease expertise no country could build alone. An estimated 30 million EU citizens are living with a rare disease. That's a huge challenge, and ERNs are working together to make sure everyone gets the specialised care they need.

The report documents over 2,100 virtual CPMS consultations, delivering expert, multidisciplinary advice across borders so patients can access specialist input without the need to travel.

ERNs, demonstrate the power of European cooperation — strengthening health resilience, supporting clinical excellence, and improving access to expertise for rare disease patients across all Member States.

Read the report and learn more about how ERNs — and the clinicians and multidisciplinary teams who power them — support patients across Europe.

Last week, EURACAN held a high-level brainstorming session that brought together leading European experts to exchange ideas and define strategic directions for advancing care and research in rare cancers.

The meeting fostered in-depth discussions across several priority areas:

-Artificial Intelligence (AI): exploring its role in improving diagnosis, decision support, and research integration.
- Clinical and Translational Research: bridging innovation with patient care to accelerate the development of effective therapies.
- Data Research: enhancing data sharing, quality, and interoperability to strengthen evidence generation.
- Development of Guidelines – Expert vs. Evidence: examining the balance between expert consensus and data-driven recommendations.
- Funding Opportunities, Partnerships, and Policies: identifying mechanisms to support sustainable collaboration across Europe.
- Rare Cancer Forum: reinforcing exchange and multi-stakeholder engagement.

The session underscored EURACAN’s commitment to fostering collaboration and innovation in the field of rare cancers. By bringing together multidisciplinary expertise from across Europe, EURACAN continues to strengthen the collective effort to improve outcomes for patients with rare cancers.

✨ EURACAN Exchange Programme: Empowering Collaboration in Rare Cancer Care

Rare adult solid cancers are complex and challenging to treat, requiring expert knowledge and strong cooperation across borders. The EURACAN Exchange Programme was created to foster this vital collaboration by enabling healthcare professionals and researchers across Europe to share expertise, improve patient care, and advance research.

Today, we are excited to share a testimony from one of our recent participants, Dr Sinan Emre Güler from the LMU Klinikum München who took part in this learning and networking opportunity at The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust.

"Through the EURACAN exchange program, I had the privilege of completing a two-week observership at the Royal Marsden Hospital in London, working with the Sarcoma Unit.

This experience provided an in-depth view of the multidisciplinary management of sarcomas, from initial diagnosis to complex treatment planning. I attended outpatient clinics, MDT meetings, and ward rounds, gaining valuable insight into the hospital’s collaborative and patient-centered approach.

A highlight of the observership was the opportunity to witness the hospital’s active role in clinical research. I could observ several ongoing clinical trials and saw firsthand how trial participation is integrated into routine care, offering patients early access to innovative therapies. This close connection between research and practice was truly inspiring and underscored the hospital’s leadership in rare cancer care.

The professionalism, openness, and expertise of the team created a welcoming and enriching environment. This observership significantly deepened my understanding of sarcoma treatment and reinforced the importance of cross-border collaboration in managing rare cancers.

I am sincerely grateful to EURACAN and the Royal Marsden for this exceptional opportunity and highly recommend the program to colleagues across Europe."
