HealthNet TPO Restoring health, rebuilding communities We use health both as a goal and means: the goal is to reach accessible health care for all.

Healthnet TPO is a Dutch aid agency that restores and strengthens health care systems in areas disrupted by war or disaster. In these areas people are facing the immense task of rebuilding society while they suffer from poverty, diseases and the emotional consequences of conflict. By working on that together with local communities we use ‘health’ as a means to bring people together and to restore mutual trust. On this page we post updates about our project countries, colleagues and themes.

HealthNet TPO reaches isolated Arit Valley after the Afghanistan earthquake

On 31 August, a devastating earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan, killing more than 2,200 people and leaving thousands without shelter, food, or healthcare. Entire villages were cut off, unreachable by road or even air.

Read the full testimony of Dr. Shahid and his team, who — when even helicopters could not land — chose to walk more than three hours through mountains and aftershocks, carrying medicines and supplies on their backs, to be the first to reach Arit Valley and bring help to cut-off villages.

Read the testimony:

On 31 August, a devastating earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan, leaving thousands of families without shelter, food, or access to healthcare. The disaster has claimed more than 2,200 lives, and entire villages were cut off from the outside world as roads were destroyed and even air support failed...

Afghanistan Earthquake Emergency Response

Our teams continue to work around the clock in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake in eastern Afghanistan.

- Nearly 1,000 people with injuries have been treated in our clinics and by mobile health teams.

- Six emergency teams are now deployed in the epicentre area of Nurgal district in Kunar province, with one additional team mobilised from Laghman province.

- Three teams mobilised to provide mental health and psychosocial services, focusing on women and children.

HealthNet TPO staff, many of whom are themselves part of the affected communities, are providing lifesaving care under extremely challenging conditions.

The needs remain immense. Remote villages have been reached but road access remains challenging since the roads have been damaged by the quake or covered in landslide. Your support is urgently needed to scale up our response.

Together, we can deliver lifesaving care and stand in solidarity with Afghan people during this crisis: https://healthnettpo.org/donate/

In 2024, HealthNet TPO’s work in Afghanistan was a testament to what is possible through local leadership and resilience. Across 18 diverse projects, we reached more than 5.2 million people with vital healthcare and psychosocial services, in some of the most remote areas of the country.
These results were made possible thanks to our 4,176 local colleagues, who brought medical care and mental health support to their communities.

Among these achievements was our Eye Care Programme, through which we perform over 5,000 cataract surgeries each year. Supported by the Fred Hollows Foundation, this work is restoring sight, dignity, and hope to thousands of people.

"After my surgery, I can finally see again... it transformed my life." — Maulalad, Patient

Maulalad reminds us that restoring health is not just about medicine, it is about restoring dignity and independence.

In 2024, HealthNet TPO’s work in South Sudan included 5 major projects. We reached 675,000 people, many of whom live in areas affected by conflict and displacement.

Our 87 local colleagues ensured access to healthcare, mental health, and psychosocial services, training more than 2,100 individuals to carry this work forward in their own communities. Through mental health workers, we helped build a local network of support that will last beyond our direct involvement.

"We aim to make mental health discussions part of everyday life..." — Boniface, Programme Coordinator

Each trained community member represents a step toward awareness and support, laying the foundation for long-term change.

Malaria remains a major health challenge — especially in areas affected by conflict, displacement or limited access to care — but progress is possible when communities are equipped with the tools and training they need.

At HealthNet TPO, we support local health systems to respond effectively. This means working alongside health workers and communities to strengthen prevention, diagnosis and treatment.

In 2024:
– In Afghanistan, over 76,000 people were treated for malaria, and more than 1,900 health workers were trained to prevent, recognise and manage this illness.
– In South Sudan, 138,000 children received care for malaria and other common illnesses through community health workers.

Colombia's journey toward healing continues, and in 2024, HealthNet TPO supported 335 women as they navigated the impact of gender-based violence and worked toward recovery through mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS).

Though our team counted just 7 local colleagues, their impact was wide-reaching. They led 106 training sessions stemming from mental health support, strengthening local capacity, and building resilience, one conversation at a time.

"This space was a gift... it was about finding new ways to live beyond pain." — Fabrina, Journalist

For many, our programmes offered not only services but also a space to share common experiences and learn from each other. We are proud to have helped create spaces where healing is not only possible, but sustainable.

In 2024, our work in Burundi focused on what matters most, health. Through 3 key projects, we reached 106,000 people, bringing health and psychosocial services to local communities and refugees.

Our 153 local colleagues played a central role in offering care where it is most needed. In refugee camps, we supported over 2,000 safe deliveries, ensuring mothers and babies received skilled assistance. Beyond numbers, our work meant ensuring that families could welcome their children safely, and that support, nutrition, and wellbeing were maintained.

"At the refugee camp, we treat people to get stronger and healthier" — Judit, Nutritionist

This year for World Health Day, we would like to shine a spotlight on the great work that our team in South Sudan is doing to improve access to essential healthcare.

Their efforts include the provision of essential medicines to health facilities, organising community engagement meetings, conducting outpatient department (OPD) consultations, and carrying out activities under the Expanded Programme on Immunisation (EPI).

In South Sudan, our focus under the EPI programme is on increasing childhood immunisation coverage, reducing drop-out rates, and ultimately decreasing illness and death caused by vaccine-preventable diseases, particularly among children under the age of five.

In 2024, a total number of 38,746 children were fully immunised through HealthNet TPO-supported facilities.

We are proud of our team in South Sudan for their dedicated and impactful work in strengthening the health system and supporting communities.

Help us achieve our mission to protect vulnerable populations and ensure that everyone has the opportunity to live a healthy and dignified life.

Each year, an estimated 74,000 people in Afghanistan develop tuberculosis (TB). While treatment is free and effective, stigma and lack of access to care prevent many from seeking help.

Nasrat, 20 years old, shares his experience:

“Before I was diagnosed with TB, I was weak and unable to work to earn a living for my family. My relationship with people was cut off because people feared tuberculosis and did not even want to talk to me.”

“When I heard my TB diagnosis, I was very sad. But the doctor told me that TB treatment was free and that if I completed my treatment properly, I would recover quickly. I completed the medicine and now I am healthy.”

HealthNet TPO provides free diagnosis and treatment in Afghanistan and raises awareness to reduce stigma. TB can be treated, and support makes all the difference.

The COVID-19 pandemic has further challenged efforts to achieve a TB-free Afghanistan and reduce deaths by 75% by the end of 2025. Continued investment in prevention, diagnosis, and treatment is crucial.
