This Sunday, we're screening HAAGUA at AltaSea. 🌊

It's an Indigenous surf film by Native Like Water, about Native surfers on the coasts of California and Mexico returning to a practice their ancestors knew — surfing not as a sport, but as a return. Founder Marc A. Chavez will be there to introduce it himself.

The screening is part of the OceanLove Innovation Awards Ceremony, where three winners — chosen from 487 ideas sent in from 91 countries — will each receive $10,000 in seed funding to build their idea.

There's an exhibition fair from 1:30, speakers from around the world, and drinks and snacks available at the venue afterwards.

This year: 487 applications from 91 countries. We're a non-profit, run entirely by volunteers, endorsed by the UN Decade of Ocean Science three years running. Our global ambassadors: Dr. Sylvia Earle, Paul Polman and Tatiana Mendes.

Here's what the 2026 OceanLove Innovation Awards look like on a map.

487 applications. 91 countries. Six continents. Half from Africa, three quarters from the Global South — and 87% more than last year, 5.7 times what we received in 2024.

Every pin is someone who looked at the ocean and decided to do something about it. Tanzania sent 56. Ghana 48. Nigeria 37. Kenya 32. And 37 countries sent exactly one — a single idea, from a single person, that we would never have reached otherwise.

To everyone who applied: thank you. Judging is underway, and bootcamp invitations go out soon. Keep an eye on your inbox.
