Amuzgo women begin weaving at seven, using backstrap looms made of wooden rods and beams. These looms are secured from an upper end to a tree or wall and attached to the weaver's waist at the lower end. Their weaving technique involves lifting warp threads with heddle rods and beating the weft with a wooden "machete" to create unique clothing and household items like huipils, blusas, rebozos, tortilleros, and manteles. This ancient craft takes weeks to a year to complete and yields one-of-a-kind pieces that showcase techniques such as brocade, gauze, and "co**ha de armadillo." The assembly and finishing involve intricate decorative hand stitching, embroidery, and braiding. Despite facing challenges, these women preserve their cultural identity and traditions, passing them down through generations and uniting as a resilient force of resistance.

Las mujeres Amuzgas empiezan a tejer a los siete años con telares de cintura hechos con varillas y vigas de madera. Estos telares se aseguran desde un extremo superior a un árbol o pared y se sujetan a la cintura del tejedor en el extremo inferior. Su técnica de tejido consiste en levantar hilos de urdimbre con varillas de lizo y golpear la trama con un "machete" de madera para crear prendas únicas y artículos para el hogar como huipiles, blusas, rebozos, tortilleros y manteles. Esta antigua artesanía tarda de semanas a un año en completarse y produce piezas únicas que muestran técnicas como el brocado, la gasa y la "co**ha de armadillo". El ensamblaje y el acabado implican intrincados bordados, randa y trenzados a mano. A pesar de enfrentar desafíos, estas mujeres preservan su identidad cultural y sus tradiciones, transmitiéndolas de generación en generación y uniéndose como una fuerza de resistencia resiliente.

In the backstrap loom, Mesoamerican women have woven dreams and traditions since pre-Hispanic times. Amid warp and weft threads, emerge canvases that narrate the cultural richness of each region. As a sacred gift from deities like Ixchel, textile art endures, passed down with love from generation to generation, becoming the vibrant essence of their cultural identity. Teaching begins in childhood and blossoms with women who bring dreams to life in every thread. The Amuzgo backstrap loom transforms into a communal ritual, where shared time and blended colors weave stories, capturing the essence of nature and surroundings, intertwining life with art.

En el telar de cintura, las mujeres mesoamericanas han tejido sueños y tradiciones desde los tiempos prehispánicos. Entre hilos de urdimbre y trama, emergen lienzos que narran la riqueza cultural de cada región. Como don sagrado de deidades como Ixchel, el arte textil perdura transmitiéndose con amor de generación en generación, convirtiéndose en la esencia viva de su identidad cultural. La enseñanza empieza en la infancia y florece con las mujeres, quienes materializan sueños en cada hebra. El telar de cintura Amuzgo se convierte en un ritual comunitario, donde el tiempo compartido y los colores mezclados tejen historias, capturando la esencia de la naturaleza y el entorno, entrelazando la vida con el arte.

Xochistlahuaca is a charming town nestled in the state of Guerrero (Mexico), 407 meters above sea level and with 4,761 inhabitants. Embraced by mountains and deciduous forests, this sub-humid-warm climate is the cherished territory of the Amuzgo people, an indigenous community with a fascinating cultural heritage, vibrant traditions, and exquisite crafts. Although the origins of this group remain a mystery, the oral history narrates that they arrived from a place surrounded by water called "Ndyuuaxenncue - Middle Lands" back in pre-Columbian times. Referred to as "tzjon noan - People of yarn," the Amuzgo people proudly speak "ñomndaa – the word of water" and are renowned for their exceptional textile heritage. The town's serene surroundings and the genuine hospitality of its inhabitants leave a lasting impression on those who venture into this captivating corner of Mexico, where time-honoured traditions and modern-day life coexist in harmony.

Xochistlahuaca es un pueblo encantador ubicado en el estado de Guerrero (México), a 407 metros sobre el nivel del mar y con 4.761 habitantes. Rodeado por montañas y bosques caducifolios, este clima cálido subhúmedo es el territorio apreciado del pueblo Amuzgo, una comunidad indígena con una fascinante herencia cultural, tradiciones vibrantes y exquisitas artesanías. Aunque los orígenes de este grupo permanecen un misterio, la historia oral narra que llegaron desde un lugar rodeado de agua llamado "Ndyuuaxenncue - Tierras Medias" en la época precolombina. Conocidos como "tzjon noan – Gente de hilo", los Amuzgo hablan con orgullo "ñomndaa - la palabra del agua" y son reconocidos por su excepcional patrimonio textil. Los serenos paisajes del pueblo y la auténtica hospitalidad de sus habitantes dejan una impresión duradera en aquellos que se aventuran en este cautivador rincón de México, donde las tradiciones centenarias y la vida moderna coexisten en armonía.

That afternoon the women gathered under the shade with their needles. In a harmonious display of unity, embroidered the seams and adorned the shoulders of a huipil. The sweet melodies of chirping chicks and turkeys filled the silence as their hands moved skillfully. Luna, brimming with youthful energy, couldn't resist joining in, playfully imitating their motions and cherishing the profound connections within her community.

Esa tarde las mujeres se juntaron bajo la sombra con sus agujas. En armoniosa muestra de unidad, bordaran las costuras y adornaran los hombros de un huipil. Las dulces melodías del canto de los pollitos y los pavos llenaron el silencio mientras sus manos se movían hábilmente. Luna, rebosante de energía juvenil, no pudo resistirse a unirse, imitando juguetonamente sus movimientos y apreciando las profundas conexiones dentro de su comunidad.

Mexican Indigo (Indigofera suffruticosa) is a dye plant found in several regions of Mexico. The process of obtaining indigo dye is labor-intensive, lasting 4-5 days, and involves handcrafted organic methods. The cultivation starts with sowing Jiquilite seeds before the rainy season, continues with harvesting in mid-Sep and its production in Oct. The introduction of chemical dyes had social and economic impacts in these regions, leading to the abandonment of traditional agricultural activities and the rise of industrial production. The limited support for indigo producers and the devaluation of handcrafted textiles resulted in the decline of indigo cultivation. However, communities like La Huacana (Michoacán) & Santiago Niltepec (Oaxaca) continue to cultivate and produce indigo.
In Xochis, indigo flourishes, yet the art of indigo color extraction has been lost. In our quest to revive this ancient tradition, we are exploring diverse extraction techniques that can be embraced within our cherished community.

El añil (Indigofera suffruticosa) es una planta tintórea que se encuentra en varias regiones de México. El proceso de obtención del tinte requiere mucha mano de obra, dura de 4 a 5 días y involucra métodos orgánicos artesanales. El cultivo inicia con la siembra de semillas de Jiquilite antes de la temporada de lluvias, continúa con la cosecha a mediados de Sep y su producción en Oct. La introducción de tintes químicos tuvo impactos sociales y económicos en estas regiones, lo que provocó el abandono de las actividades agrícolas tradicionales y el surgimiento de producción industrial. El limitado apoyo a los productores de añil y la devaluación de los textiles artesanales resultaron en el declive del cultivo de añil. Sin embargo, comunidades como La Huacana (Michoacán) y Santiago Niltepec (Oaxaca) continúan cultivando y produciendo añil. En Xochis el añil florece, pero se ha perdido el arte de extraer su color. En nuestra búsqueda por revivir esta antigua tradición, exploramos diversas técnicas de extracción que puedan adoptarse dentro de nuestra querida comunidad.
