OPEN Foundation Advancing psychedelic research and therapies to benefit science, healthcare, and society since 2007.

OPEN Foundation is the organiser of the Interdisciplinary Conference on Psychedelic Research. Founded in 2007, the OPEN Foundation is the leading nonprofit organisation in the Netherlands and Europe dedicated to advancing the knowledge and understanding of psychedelics through research. We aim to optimise the potential of psychedelics in a therapeutic context and to help integrate psychedelics int

o society in a way that’s both sustainable and responsible. We fulfil our mission by bringing together and educating professionals, policymakers, and the public through conferences, trainings, membership programmes, and by facilitating and promoting rigorous, interdisciplinary research.

Why does it matter whether a psychedelic trial is truly blinded? Because the answer shapes whether we can trust what the science is actually telling us.

In a typical clinical trial, comparing a treatment to a placebo only works if participants don’t know which one they received. However, psychedelics produce such vivid, unmistakable effects that both patients and researchers can often tell who got the real thing, undermining the blind before the trial even begins. When that happens, the placebo group’s response becomes hard to interpret, and expectation itself starts to blur with the treatment’s true effect.

This isn’t a minor technicality, with functional unblinding being a major factor in the FDA’s rejection of MDMA-assisted therapy for PTSD, and it continues to shape how regulators, researchers, and clinicians evaluate the evidence behind psychedelic-assisted therapies.

Join Balázs Szigeti, PhD, a clinical data scientist at UCSF’s Translational Psychedelic Research Program, on Tuesday 8 September as we unpack this challenge. Balázs is known for his work on functional unblinding and the “know-cebo” effect, the diminished placebo response seen in psychedelic trials, and even invented “self-blinding,” a citizen-science method that lets people implement their own placebo control without clinical supervision.

Curious about psychedelic-assisted therapy but not sure where to begin?

Meet Foundations, our fully online, 13-month training designed to give mental health and adjacent professionals the theoretical grounding this work demands.

Through pre-recorded lectures, live tutor groups, and Q&A sessions with expert faculty, Foundations builds a comprehensive understanding of psychedelic-assisted therapy, spanning its clinical, ethical, cultural, and scientific dimensions.

Foundations is for mental health practitioners who are interested in learning the principles, evidence, and ethics of psychedelic-assisted therapy. It's a good fit if you're open-minded, curious, reflective, and ready to grow alongside a community of peers.

Successful completion of Foundations counts toward the full ADEPT programme, if you go on to enrol.

If you're ready to build that grounding, Foundations starts November 2026.

Curious what our ADEPT students are up to beyond the programme itself? Meet Guy Simon, a psychotherapist and clinical supervisor based in Amsterdam, and one of our ADEPT alumni.

Guy is the founder and Clinical Director of Impulse Integrative Clinical Center, and a co-founder, board member, and Chair of the Clinical Advisory Committee at SafeHeart. His work draws on relational and psychoanalytic psychotherapy, mindfulness, Buddhist psychology, and trauma-informed care, alongside ongoing doctoral research into trauma, psychedelic experiences, and meaning-making.

We asked Guy what ADEPT means to him, even after years of teaching, supervising, and carrying clinical responsibility himself. In his words: "At ADEPT, I get to be a student again, and I find that genuinely refreshing. I can bring questions from my own work that I have not yet resolved and discuss them with people whose clinical backgrounds and assumptions differ from mine." He describes it as a place where his thinking gets challenged, and where he can notice the blind spots that come with his own training and experience.

Follow along with Guy's work, and stay tuned as we continue sharing more from our ADEPT community. 🌱

Psychedelic-assisted therapy is not something you should improvise your way into. It asks for real fluency, an understanding that spans the neuroscience and the clinical evidence, the ethics and the history, the relational skill to hold non-ordinary states of consciousness with steadiness and care.

ADEPT is where that fluency begins, offering a comprehensive and nuanced grounding in psychedelic therapy.

Only a few weeks left to register. Learn more: https://www.learnwithadept.com/

Death is a sacred threshold that every one of us will eventually cross, and facing our own mortality, even at a distance, can offer profound clarity for how we live and how we care for others others.

Join Christine Caldwell, Founder and Executive Director of End of Life Psychedelic Care, on Thursday 27 August at 7 PM CEST for Peer Perspectives: Psychedelic Work at the End of Life, an interactive session exploring the inner world of those facing serious illness, and what it asks of us as facilitators to hold death and dying with care. We'll reflect on what shifts when time feels finite, and sit together with a simple but essential question: what does death mean to me?

This event is part of the OPEN Community Membership. You can attend by becoming a member or making a one-time donation: https://open-foundation.org/events/online/peer-perspectives-psychedelics-end-of-life/

There's always something happening in the OPEN community. 💫

Coming up, we've got a Journal Club discussion on esketamine in group therapy and a Peer Perspectives session on psychedelics in end-of-life care, both chances to go deeper with experts working across this field.

If you missed our recent fireside chat with Adam Aronovich, curator of , the replay is available on our platform. And if you missed the community picnic in July, where over 30 of us gathered in person for an evening outside the usual online spaces, there's more to come as we're looking to run in-person events more regularly.

There's less than a month to go until ADEPT's second cohort begins, and only a couple of weeks left to register. This training is designed for practitioners who feel ready to move beyond personal insight into the sustained clinical, ethical and relational work of supporting others through psychedelic states.

There's a particular moment many therapists recognise, when a personal encounter with a psychedelic reshapes something in how they see their work, and brings with it a pull to bring that possibility into the therapy room.

This instinct is worth taking seriously, yet it also distinct from the training required to hold another person's altered state safely, especially when a session becomes difficult or unfamiliar. Building these capacity asks for supervision, an ethical grounding solid enough to withstand complexity, and the relational maturity to stay present regardless of where the process leads.

ADEPT is a two year hybrid training built around that gap, developing the hands-on competency this work requires alongside sustained supervision and community.
