Change the Game Academy

Change the Game Academy The problem - Currently, many parts of our world face political instability, climate crisis and a diminishing civic voice. Foreign funding is drying up.

Empowering Civil Society Organisations all over the world, and especially in low and middle income countries, to learn to raise funds locally and to mobilise support. Communities need and deserve access to essential know-how to shape their own future. That is why a group of social change organisations from the global South and North decided to change the ‘rules’ of the ‘development game’ to

In Cambodia, the Advocacy and Policy Institute - វិទ្យាស្ថានតស៊ូមតិ និងគោលនយោបាយ (API) works to strengthen civic engagement, good governance and public participation.

As a Change the Game Academy partner, API supports communities and civil society organizations to take part in decision-making, engage with local authorities and advocate for their rights.

One result: API has strengthened 170 community-based organisations to participate in local decision-making and advocate for community priorities.

Because when local organisations become stronger, communities gain more voice, confidence and autonomy to create change from the ground up.

From 1 to 7.

After WACSI’s Change the Game Academy Mobilising Support training, the number of organisations directly contributing to policy drafting increased from 1 to 7.

That is more than a number; it shows what can happen when civil society organisations have the tools, confidence and strategy to engage decision-makers and bring community priorities into policy spaces.

Advocacy is not only about raising your voice, it is about helping shape the decisions that affect communities.

Money matters, but it is not the only resource an organization needs to move forward.

In many communities, there are other forms of support that are often overlooked: trust, relationships, volunteers, skills, local spaces, visibility and people who believe in the work.

When organizations start recognizing and mobilizing these resources, they can build a stronger base around their mission. This does not remove the need for funding, but it can make the organization less dependent on one donor, one grant or one opportunity.

What kind of support has made the biggest difference in your organization?

What happens when training turns into local action?

In Rumba Village, The Gambia, access to clean and reliable water had been a daily challenge for years.

But change did not start with a ready-made solution from outside; it started with people coming together, recognising a shared problem and organising around it.

Through Mobilising Support training, local leaders and community members gained practical tools to define priorities, engage people and mobilise support.

What began as a training exercise became a real community-led solution: a sustainable water system now serving more than 600 people.

More than infrastructure, this story is about ownership, confidence and collective responsibility.

Because when communities have the tools, relationships and trust to act, learning can become lasting change.

When climate challenges hit, local capacity matters.

Floods, droughts, water scarcity and biodiversity loss affect people’s lives directly; their health, livelihoods, safety and future.

In Peru and Cambodia, stories from Voices of Change show how communities are organising to protect water, preserve biodiversity, strengthen livelihoods and prepare for climate challenges through local action.

These stories remind us that local resources are more than money; they are also knowledge, leadership, networks, trust and the ability to come together around shared priorities.

But communities should not face climate challenges alone. Local capacity does not replace public responsibility, fair funding or international cooperation.

It helps communities act, mobilise and advocate for the support they need.

This World Environment Day, read Voices of Change and discover more stories of community-led change.

Organizations are doing meaningful work, but they find themselves waiting. Waiting for the next grant, the next donor, or the next opportunity to move forward.

Over time, that waiting can slow things down. Projects take longer to develop, teams feel uncertain about what comes next, and key decisions end up depending on factors outside the organization’s control.

In many cases, things begin to shift when organisations start building support closer to home. That can mean engaging people in the community, strengthening relationships, and creating a base of trust that doesn’t rely on a single source of funding.

It’s not always the quickest route, and it takes consistent effort. But it often leads to something more stable and more sustainable in the long run.

For more than 50 years, CESE has stood alongside social movements, grassroots groups and communities fighting for rights in Brazil.

Founded in 1973, during the military dictatorship, CESE was born as a sign of hope and resistance. Since then, its work has helped strengthen grassroots organizing, the defence of democracy, social justice and environmental justice.

As a Change the Game Academy partner in Brazil, CESE also supports grassroots organizations to mobilize local resources, build stronger alliances and defend their territories with greater autonomy.

Because when grassroots groups become stronger, their struggles gain more voice, more legitimacy and more conditions to continue.

In Satara, India, a simple idea brought people together: a local food festival where rural women and farmers could sell what they grow and make by hand.

For AWARD, this was more than fundraising. It was about confidence, dignity and showing what can happen when communities are supported to take the lead.

In this video, Manjusha Khedkar shares a little of that journey, from the training with smilefoundation and Change the Game Academy to an initiative that helped farmers earn income, connect with new supporters and feel proud of their work.

Dependency on one donor can feel normal, until something changes.

A grant is delayed, a donor shifts priorities, or one opportunity doesn’t come through, and suddenly the whole organization has to pause, adjust or start again.

That is why local resource mobilization matters.

It does not mean organizations no longer need funding. They do. But it can help them build a stronger base around their work, with people, relationships, skills, networks and support that already exist locally.

Over time, this can make organizations less dependent on one decision, one donor or one external opportunity.

Real change lasts longer when it grows from the communities themselves.

In Kenya, Kenya Community Development Foundation (KCDF) has been working with grassroots organizations to strengthen local leadership, local giving, advocacy and organizational capacity.

Through Change the Game Academy, KCDF has already supported more than 341 organisations with training in Local Fundraising and Mobilizing Support.

But this work is not only about raising money: It is about helping organisations build stronger relationships with their communities, mobilize local resources, speak up for their rights and become stronger voices for the people they serve.

Because when local organizations are stronger, communities have more power to shape their own future.

That is why this partnership matters.
