REMEMBERING EMANCIPATION ⛓️‍💥

Some moments in history must not simply be mentioned. They must be remembered.

Through a brief dramatization of the process of Emancipation, our youth helped bring history beyond dates and words, turning it into something we could see, feel and reflect upon.

Their participation reminds us that young people are a fundamental part of keeping our culture and collective memory alive, carrying forward the stories of those who came before us.

185 years later, we remember the struggle, honor the freedom, and continue the legacy. 🖤

WE REMEMBER. WE HONOR. WE CONTINUE.

LADY EMANCIPATION 2026 👑✨

A crown can celebrate beauty, but this one was created to represent something more.

For the first time in Port, our Emancipation Day commemoration welcomed the election of Lady Emancipation and her two Princesses, celebrating the strength, beauty, intelligence, confidence and cultural pride of Black women.

Because the legacy of Emancipation also lives through the women who carry our culture forward.

Women who know where they come from.
Women who take pride in their identity.
Women who understand that our Blackness, our history and our culture are worthy of being celebrated.

To our Lady Emancipation, 1st Princess and 2nd Princess, may you wear these titles with pride and remember everything they represent. 👑🖤

This special commemoration of 185 years since the Emancipation of Slavery on Nicaragua’s Caribbean Coast was organized by AVOCENIC and the ICPJ, with the support of the Regional Government, joining efforts to honor our ancestors, celebrate our culture and continue strengthening our Black identity.

FACES OF EMANCIPATION 🖤

Emancipation is history, but it also has a face.

It lives in our elders, in the generations carrying our culture today, in our young people, and in every person who recognizes the importance of preserving and honoring our Afro-descendant history.

As we commemorated 185 years since the Emancipation of Slavery on Nicaragua’s Caribbean Coast, Creole and Garifuna community members in Puerto Cabezas, cultural leaders, local and regional authorities, representatives of institutions, and friends of our community came together to share in this moment of remembrance and celebration.

Different faces. Different generations. Different spaces within our community, gathered around one shared purpose: to remember where we come from and recognize the legacy that continues shaping who we are.

Because emancipation is not simply a date we commemorate.

It is a history we carry, a freedom inherited through generations, and a responsibility to ensure that the stories, struggles and contributions of our ancestors continue to be remembered.

These are some of the faces that joined us in honoring that legacy. 🖤

WE REMEMBER. WE HONOR. WE CONTINUE.

Hoy celebramos nuestras raíces, risas y resistencia.

As African Heritage Month comes to a close, we reflect on the importance of passing our culture from one generation to the next.

Through this Plat Pole (Ribbon Pole Dance) presentation during the May Pole celebrations in the Pedro Joaquín Chamorro neighborhood of Puerto Cabezas, we portrayed the transmission of cultural knowledge, identity, and pride across generations of Creole women. Guided by our elders, embraced by our youth, and carried forward by our children, this presentation honored the role women continue to play in preserving our heritage.

Culture is more than something we inherit. It is something we teach, practice, celebrate, and protect. As we continue celebrating our African heritage, may we nurture cultural pride and ensure that future generations know who they are, where they come from, and the value of the legacy they carry.

❤️💛💚🖤
