Front Line Defenders Front Line Defenders - the International Foundation for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders Who Are Human Rights Defenders? Why Human Rights Defenders?
(1)

HRDs can be community leaders, lawyers, journalists, trade unionists and / or anybody who works peacefully to promote or protect the human rights of others. These people demonstrate amazing courage to stand up for the rights of others despite facing the most terrible risks. In turn Front Line Defenders focuses all of its energies on trying to provide practical and immediate support to improve the

security of these brave individuals. The organisation aims to provide this practical and immediate support through security grants, training and lobbying, and also strives to address the protection needs identified by the HRDs themselves. The people who are most effective in the struggle to promote and protect human rights are those working at the local and national level. These are the people who have a real impact within their communities and this is consequently why they face repression and violence from the entrenched interests of those who abuse power. The most important thing the international community can do to promote the realisation of human rights around the world is to help create a safe space and increased protection for HRDs to undertake their legitimate activities at the local and national levels.

📍 OPT

🚨Front Line Defenders strongly condemns the Israeli naval forces’ military interception of the peaceful Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) in international waters, approximately 250 nautical miles from the coast of Gaza.

The GSF is an independent, non-violent civilian fleet seeking to challenge the ongoing blockade imposed on Gaza and establish a humanitarian corridor amid the worsening humanitarian crisis.

Among the crew members are international human rights defenders, medical personnel, journalists, humanitarian volunteers, and solidarity activists.

The Israeli forces intercepted several vessels and detained crew members. At the time of publication, there is limited information regarding the whereabouts, legal status, and health conditions of those detained.

We call for the immediate and safe release of all detained human rights defenders, humanitarian actors, and solidarity activists of the GSF, the return of all seized vessels, and urgent international action to guarantee their safety and protection.

📍TUNISIA

🚨Front Line Defenders expresses concern and solidarity with the Tunisian League for Human Rights (LTDH) and Avocats Sans Frontières (ASF) in Tunisia, following decisions to suspend their activities for 30 days.

LTDH is Tunisia’s oldest human rights organisation and a 2015 Nobel Peace Prize laureate as part of the National Dialogue Quartet. ASF works to promote access to justice, fair trials, and judicial independence in Tunisia.

The suspension orders appear to form part of a broader pattern of judicial harassment, administrative repression, and restrictions targeting independent civil society organisations, human rights defenders, and critical voices in Tunisia.

Front Line Defenders calls on the Tunisian authorities to immediately revoke the suspension orders, guarantee the right to freedom of association, and ensure that civil society organisations can operate freely and safely.

📍EL SALVADOR

🚨One year ago, Salvadoran lawyer and woman human rights defender Ruth López was arbitrarily detained in what numerous organisations have documented as political persecution linked directly to her fight against corruption.

Ruth is one of the most recognised anti-corruption lawyers in Central America. Since 2024, her work defending human rights in El Salvador has been recognised with at least six international awards and honours.

Today marks an entire year she has spent imprisoned without trial.

We join the growing national and international calls for her immediate release and echo her demand for a public trial — a right that continues to be denied.

📍TÜRKİYE

Front Line Defenders welcomes the acquittal of LGBTIQ+ rights defender Defne Güzel following the first hearing in her case on 13 May 2026.

Defne Güzel, Chair of the May 17 Association, had faced charges under the Law on Associations in connection with publications related to LGBTIQ+ rights work. During the hearing, the prosecutor requested her acquittal due to insufficient evidence, and the Court ruled in her favour.

Front Line Defenders reiterates its call on the authorities in Türkiye to ensure that human rights defenders and LGBTIQ+ organisations can carry out their peaceful and legitimate work without fear of judicial harassment or reprisals.

📍 NORWAY

Front Line Defenders welcomes the news of the Norwegian Court of Appeal unanimously rejecting the European Arrest Warrant issued by Greek authorities against Aegean Boat Report founder, HRD Tommy Olsen.

The judicial harassment against Tommy Olsen started in 2021 when he was accused of facilitating ‘illegal migration flows’ which was subsequently dismissed due to lack of evidence. The charges under the arrest warrant included human trafficking, facilitation of human trafficking, and operating a criminal organisation through Aegean Boat Report.

Founded in 2017, Aegean Boat Report is an independent organisation which monitors and documents the maritime arrivals, pushbacks, and human rights violations against people on the move in the Aegean Sea.

In this important ruling by the Norwegian Court of Appeal, the court found that the acts described by Greek authorities do not constitute criminal offences under Norwegian law, and further found a real risk of violation of Article 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights, the right to freedom of expression.

Front Line Defenders CEO Alan Glasgow met with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney in Ottawa last week.

Amidst the global challenges faced by HRDs and human rights organisations, FLD’s partnership with Canada in support of human rights defenders at risk is especially important in the current global context.

📍ECUADOR

🚨Front Line Defenders joins 37 national and international human rights and environmental organisations in expressing deep concern regarding the criminalisation of human rights and nature defenders in Ecuador, Guilberto Talahua, Fausto Arechua, and Wilfrido Escobar, community leaders actively involved in the fight for the communities and water sources impacted by the Canadian mining project Curipamba–El Domo in Las Naves county, Bolívar province.

This case is part of a systematic pattern of criminalisation targeting environmental defenders who have spoken out against the advancement of the mining project. Currently, 32 defenders have been criminalised; 15 of them have received convictions despite the lack of sufficient evidence to establish criminal liability.

We call upon the judges of the National Court of Justice of Ecuador to act with full impartiality to guarantee due process for the HRDs Guilberto Talahua, Fausto Arechua, and Wilfrido Escobar; and to adopt a decision based on the highest international human rights standards

📍UKRAINE

🚨On 10 May 2026, women human rights defenders Olena Shevchenko and Anastasiia Gerasymenko were attacked by six unidentified men after attending a peaceful protest against the the new draft of the Civil Code of Ukraine in Ivano-Frankivsk.

Olena and Anastasiia work to defend women’s and LGBTIQ rights in Ukraine. Following the attack, they faced further obstacles when reporting the incident to police, who reportedly attempted to discourage them from filing a complaint and refused to acknowledge the possible discriminatory nature of the attack.

Front Line Defenders condemns the attack and calls on the Ukrainian authorities to carry out an immediate, thorough, and impartial investigation, bring those responsible to justice, and ensure the protection of women and LGBTIQ rights defenders.

📍 MEXICO

🚨 Front Line Defenders joins national international organisations in calling for a resolution to the unjust imprisonment of Kenia Inés Hernández Montalván, an Amuzga Indigenous woman and human rights defender who has been detained since October 2020. Since 2010, she has faced 10 criminal cases linked to her human rights work. Eight federal cases have now been closed and 2 remain. She currently faces 21 years in prison due to the two criminal cases still pending in the state of Mexico.

Kenia’s case is emblematic of the instrumentalisation of the Mexican justice system to criminalise and silence human rights defenders. National and international organisations have repeatedly highlighted her case as illustrative of the alarming pattern of arbitrary detention, prolonged pre-trial detention, and unjust, excessive and disproportionate custodial sentences imposed on Indigenous leaders in Mexico — concerns that have also been raised by the United Nations. More than 2,000 days of unjust imprisonment have had a devastating impact not only on Kenia, but also on her children, family, community, and the movements of which she is part.

We reiterate our solidarity with Kenia Hernández and call on the Mexican authorities to treat the recent closure of the federal cases as an opportunity to deliver justice and secure her release, recognising her legitimate work as a human rights defender and adhering to international human rights standards.

Courageous people across the globe are taking action every day to stop business-related human rights and environmental harms, despite increasing restrictions on civic freedoms and the risk of retaliation.

This major new analysis from Business and Human Rights Centre unpacks the global scope and scale of attacks on these defenders – the highest number in the past five years – along with stories of civil society resistance and analysis of worsening trends such as the impact of digital technologies to restrict civic space.
